Exile

I hope this is okay – this is Aldershot, after all.

My novel Exile is online – and currently free. I’d be very happy if anyone downloads it and even more so if they read it! Do let me know (a) if you have any hassles registering with Scribl (you have to register to download books from Scribl), (b) if you have any difficulty downloading the book, or reading it, and © whether you like it or not! If you do like it, I’d be very grateful for a review or a few stars on Scribl… :-)

If this goes well, I’ll put the novel I’m working on at the moment on there as well – it’s a sort of sidequel (neither a sequel nor a prequel, but related) to Exile. And possibly audiobooks of both, and of a couple of my earlier novels.

Registered, and downloaded as Epub without any problem. Displays very nicely on my e-reader. Even the italics are there, in my favourite font (which is not always the case with commercial publications). I’ve put the novel on the bottom of the stack (it’s FIFO, you know), so it may take a while before I come back to you again.

Registered, downloaded. Tried not to gag at the “story elements” part of the website. ;-)

Not started reading yet (currently reading Bleeding Violet) but it seems okay on the eReader Prestigio app (Android). I’ll try it on my proper ebook reader when I remember where I put that phone-to-big-USB widget.

Your reader should have an option whether to apply the embedded formats (including fonts) or if it should use the font you specify.

Yeah, me too. And it ain’t set in the present like it says, either! Almost made me put it on my own website instead, but I’m hoping it might get more “out there” on Scribl.

SIBA: not got far yet, just the preamble (preface, intro, what you will) & it grabbed me & made me laugh already:

Mine too – I started Pawns in about 1978, eventually completed & published it in 2014. But in a sense not my first major work of fiction: I started The Reminiscences of Penny Lane in about 2000 (not originally intending it to be a novel at all, just an alter ego on the Guardian User Talk talkboard), completed & published it in 2010.

Ah, SIBA. Now that’s interesting to me, although I suspect it may be someone putting the letters together for an entirely different reason than I’m used to.

There are unlikely to be many four letter combinations that are 1, readable (in a way qzyw isn’t), and 2, not already in use by one or more…

But, yeah, it’s nothing to do with beer. Beer bad! Buffy said so. :-)

Interesting¹ to observe that French ones are often anagrams of the English ones: For example, our AIDS becomes SIDA in French.

One of our resident cunning linguists may pop up with an explanation of the language roots and the grammatical order, although with the mongrel aspect of English it’s probably no wonder that many of ours an be rearranged without needing to switch to a different language.

That said, I do feel that some of the French ones are so contrived that it surely must have been a rearrangement to avoid using what the English use.

Quite often, the French ones are the English ones backwards. This isn’t always the case (SIDA, ADN…) but…

API → International Phonetic Alphabet
BP → Post Box
CB → Bank card (genericaly “credit card” even when it’s a debit)
FN → National Front
OLP → PLO
OTAN → NATO
RF → French Republic
UE → EU (European Union; for ÉU is the US!)

And just to throw in because the French adore their acronyms, an audio tape is called “K7”. Why? Because ké-sept = cassette.

Quite witty, it’s almost English in style. (An idea that would probably upset them.)
