I was given a Biggles book; I think I was five or six. It made little impression – I cannot even remember the title. My first comic was bought second hand for me when I was five, in Loughborough market. Evidently GIs, who were then still much in evidence in those parts, had been selling off their comics from the USA to the market stall-holders, for extra pocket money. The first story was about two alien children setting off in their rotocycles to visit the zoo, to see humans in cages there. The author had depicted the whole scene as typically suburban USA. I think even then that struck me as showing an imagination that had not gone far enough, but maybe the author thought his moral lesson more important than a sense of wonder. |
