Login problem

Is there any chance of the login issues ever getting fixed? It’s nearly impossible to log into the forums and it’s been like this for many months now. Every time I log in I have to delete my cookies and log in several times in a row before it finally remembers that I’m logged in. |

If it was simple then I’m sure Andrew would have done it by now. |

I am finding that since I started logging in from the Welcome page rather than the Forum, I’m not having any trouble at all. When I forget and log in from the forum, clearing cookies (with no ROOL tab open) before logging in from the Welcom page does the trick. |

Indeed. Using NetSurf I found the following works here. If NetSurf has already been used to browse the forum without being logged in quit and restart NetSurf. Login at the welcome page. Iconise that page once logged in (never close it and do not follow any links from it). The forum can now be browsed at leisure in a second window and posts replied to, etc.. As long as the original login welcome remains open (but iconised) there appears to be no problem. |

Sounds like the sort of thing I do with a mix of browsers from different networks and if you leave the session open long enough you should hit the weekly expiry of one of the cookies. The quirk of the whole setup is that expired cookies don’t seem to get deleted on any browser (or platform) and the forum cookies don’t seem to overwrite the previous cookie which should only last until the end of the session anyway. |

I should point out – the iconisation is not necessary, it just keeps the window ‘out of the way’. |

This does seem to be the best way. |

I’ve often wondered why it’s taking so long to fix, why not just undo the change that broke it in the first place? It’s certainly curtailed my posting substantially since it started. |

Would need to find it first. |

Indeed. Knowing exactly which item broke things would mean you knew exactly what part wasn’t working correctly now and then you’d be able to fix it with a forward move rather than a reversion. There’s also the issue of that change likely being a pre-requisite for another change and that being a pre-requisite for another and… |

Have a look at this topic, fourth post down, for a work around. https://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/11/topics/14645 I use it all the time. |

If I use Firefox-ESR from Raspbian to log into this blog there are no problems. But if I use Chromium, although it appears that I am logged in, and I can enter my reply, when it comes to clicking Save Reply I am taken straight back to the login page and all my work is lost. Can anybody think of a reason? I have not tried Chris Johnson’s prescription yet. |

Doing this from Chromium now, using the Johnson ploy. |

It works for me because I set Firefox-ESR to delete cookies on leaving a site (I think). Maybe you did the same? |

Delete history and cookies on exit – that’s exit from Firefox i.e. when you closedown Firefox. |

I don’t have that option set… but then can’t find any other either so maybe imagined the other setting. Perhaps Firefox ‘just works’. |

Mostly. I’ve had failures too. More so if I run a connection from work where the connection runs through firewalls and a Capita managed N3/HSCN to internet gateway. Pushing through the proxy server1 which introduces a bit of latency when its under load. 1 My setup allows me to do this for testing and one of my test URL’s is… |
