When Raspbian locks up.

If you are browsing a website on a Linux machine and suddenly the mouse and keyboard lock up, what should you do? Were it RISC OS I would press ALT-BREAK. What is the equivalent in Raspbian? I ask here because the raspberry pi forum does not appear to be recognizing my username and password, and I am concerned that I may have done damage to my Raspbian system by switching off when it locked up – but is there any alternative?. I checked the batteries in mouse and keyboard, I tried a different mouse and keyboard, I tried a different browser (Firefox as well as Chrome), and still the system locks up when I try to register my details on www.vodafone.co.uk. |

Normally it should not be possible to freeze Linux that way. Hardware issue? |

When I’m faced with Raspbian locking up, I utilise !Nettle to SSH in, to do a remote shutdown or to close the offending task. |

Thanks for your replies. The system began to show a couple of lines like xxxxxxx: mmc0 – error 110 while initialising SD cardwhen booting up. So I think the SD card may have been damaged. For me there is a constant tension between wanting to personalize and wanting to keep things as simple as possible to make recovery simpler. I have taken to saving out lots of stuff in my home directory to a memory stick to help that. |

bq . So I think the SD card may have been damaged. They seem to damage themselves after a while. |

A while ago I bought a Rii 2.4G wireless keyboard and mouse combination, because the keyboard was agreeably compact. Unfortunately it does not work with RISC OS, so I use it with Raspbian, keeping the venerable Logitech K260 for RISC OS. I think the locking up , when neither mouse nor keyboard functions, is due to the Rii’s wireless communication with its dongle. The difficulty with this is that there is nothing one can do but switch off ungracefully. I intend to replace the wireless with wired in the near future, in the hope that I will avoid these episodes. |
