Jumpy jumpy feedback

If I remove the RISC OS SD card from my ArmBook it boots into Manjaro, which has lots of configurability. When you click on an application you can choose the sort of visual feedback you want: nothing, blinking icon or bouncy icon. I rather like this choice. In RISC OS the application can use the HourGlass to indicate that it is doing soething, which is not quite so informative. Is there any reason why RISC OS could not have bouncers or blinkers? RISC OS does have directory icons that indicate whether the directory is open or not, which is a feature that Manjaro does not seem to have as yet.

Because it would be highly annoying?

Generally an application that takes time to load with no obvious indication (like a floppy spinning up) ought to pop up the hourglass at the very least.
Acorn actually made it smart in that it would be inhibited for the first 1/3 second, so it would be okay to turn it on and off (and if the job happened quickly, the pointer wouldn’t change).

For things that take longer (like Artworks, PhotoDesk, etc) it is usual to pop up a “splash screen” so the user can see that something is, in fact, happening.

That a lengthy application doesn’t provide any visual feedback is arguably an issue with the application, not the OS. It sounds like wibbling icons is a UI hack to get around the fact that the applications don’t bother to provide adequate feedback.

Yes, I agree. But it is good that they have thought about this. I am still slowly feeling my way with Manjaro.

The good way to do it would be a grey icon on iconbar with a small progress bar while loading.
