Congratulations to the Royal Mint for managing to create a four legged tripod. They’ll probably try to spin it as “the heat ray”, but jeez, did nobody bother looking at the Jeff Wayne album cover? |

That reminds me of the time they brought out a banknote celebrating Isaac Newton, with a background on which the earth’s orbit was depicted as circular . Same chap, d’you think? |

ROFL at the four legged tripod; but as for Earth’s orbit, it is damned nearly circular, certainly so nearly so you couldn’t possibly notice the difference on a picture on a banknote. The eccentricity is currently 0.0167. |

And there we have the difference between theory and practice :). |

I’m not sure this quite a face-palm, but while browsing around a site regarding Arizona wildlife (I was curious about the “Javelin” reference David made – collared peccary if anyone is interested) This one made me smile, and wonder whether anyone checks the text and whether the shallow boroughs were the ones that voted for Trump. Gila monsters spend much of they’re daytime activity in shallow boroughs they have dug out, in small depressions, or other shaded areas. If you’re lucky enough to see one while in the parks, stay back, snap a few pics, and observe only long enough to complete your experience without interrupting the lizard’s routine. |

There is a good reason for the homophony of burrow and borough. They come from the same root, with a cluster of meanings high → tower → safe → shelter and so forth. |
