Words change meaning. Folk had better get used to it. In the early days of the school I attended pupils were not allowed to speak English, only Latin. Pupils were addressed as magister (master), teachers (and the cooks) as dominus (lord). The importance of school cooks should not be under-estimated. |

Arbitrarily banning a word based on an incorrect assumption of its meaning in this context, and for an some offence someone perceives may be caused on someone else’s behalf, is entirely different to switching to a different language. P.S. Rick: your place is broken, or we could have had a good old rant on there. |

I don’t understand why the original/central/non-branch section of a code tree would be “master” anyway. Surely “trunk” and “branch” is a better pairing. Speaking of trunk and branch of code – where is the altered source code1 (for the clipboard support) for RPCmu? 1 Cloverleaf amendments |

“Surely “trunk” and “branch” is a better pairing.” Isn’t that treeist? |

Tryist – try a different version. :) |

This isn’t a change of meaning, this is a concerted attempt to exorcise a word based upon some misguided notion of the word being offensive when used alongside another word in an entirely different context. And, like it or not, but the pairing “master” and “slave” when referring to interface protocols has a very specific meaning that is not necessarily communicated using the idiotic selection of proposed alternatives.
That sounds painfully pretentious. Sadly, in my day “Sir” and “Miss” were supposed to evolve to referring to a teacher by their given name and think of them as a friend. I notice that they’re wanting to do away with “Sir” and “Miss” and replace it with a generic term like “Teacher”. Jeez. “Miss” is more a historical anacronism rather than a comment on the marital status of the woman (from a long ago day when female teachers were indeed often a “Miss”), but then I rather doubt any of the "Sir"s have been knighted… it’s just the words used. And, again, leave the words alone and try doing something useful about bullying and the mess of education that’s soley aiming at getting kids through an exam thanks to a nationwide obsession with league tables.
This is an important distinction to be made as well. It’s not X complaining, it’s Y thinking that X would complain. Which in it’s own way is perhaps worse, as Y is then essentially being the arbiter of what X may or may not think…rather than, you know, asking if X is actually that bothered.
Thanks. The server is “full” and things act up when that happens. I’ve sent Rob a message, so hopefully it’ll be fixed soon. It happens from time to time. When it’s back, feel free to go rant. ;)
I would guess that it’s in the context of Master Copy, as opposed to variations and forks and all the guff that isn’t the “Master”.
Doesn’t version control already have a meaning for trunks? I could have sworn I came across this word in the past (on SVN?). |

Apparently one of the American TV networks ‘banned’ Speedy Gonzalez several years ago, because someone decided that he’s offensive to Mexicans. The Mexican community then started writing letters of complaint that their beloved Speedy wasn’t on TV any more.
SVN has “main”, “trunk”, “branch” and “tag” (where “main” is the actual respository root, and the other three are project-specific). |

Finding the use of master and slave as descriptive terms uncomfortable is a modern disease. Perhaps we should change to regent and subject? I am looking forward to someone deciding that the description of plugs and sockets as male and female is to encourage the concept that gender is binary. We can then suggest alternative terms but the real solution would be to redesign plugs and sockets so that they are identical mirror images of each other and do not need such terms. |

I assume everyone knows that in certain parts of the UK, you must never ask for a ‘black’ or ‘white’ coffee, because you are a racist if you do. You have to ask for coffee with or without milk. Mind you it did cause Solihull council 0.5 million in fines for sacking an employee asking for a black coffee in a staff canteen! Might you Solihull is also the council that flies some odd coloured flag it made up to ‘highlight’ the ethnic communities in there council area rather then the national flag. To be PC…… Oh and one of my favorite is you are not supposed to have a Chairman/Chairwoman as that is sexist apparently, they should be called the Chair and on occasions they allow a Chairperson. A Chair is to me something you sit on! It’s all getting out of hand. |

I have no problem with the Doctor being male or female, or of any ethnicity, as that is the nature of the Doctor – to change. James Bond, however should be James Bond, and preferably Scottish – British at least – to tie into the original books. I wouldn’t expect a central character in Roots or Selma to be played by someone of a different ethnicity. I’m sure the various content creators can come up with suitable strong and interesting new characters to give roles to people who don’t fit the way a particular well-loved character has been written. |

As Rick will know, this report shows our French neighbours going in precisely the opposite direction when it comes to job titles. |

I assume everyone knows that in certain parts of the UK, you must never ask for a ‘black’ or ‘white’ coffee, Stop it! that is just a wind up as I am sure you realise. Someone has been pulling your leg! If someone tried that on me I would ask for a black Americano using a six letter word beginning with n just to make it clear that they were a prat! |

That would surely just be an extension of the French language attributing a gender to chars, tables, and all other objects. |
