Shhhh, Shhhh |

We’re all shocked by the alleged imminent death of RISC OS, I think… (see thread about the future caused by 64-bit) |

I just asked my Pi4 how it was feeling, and it said “I’m fine, thanks.” |

Keep the noise down and get on with the work. You’ve only done 33 & you’ve still 31 to go. Where do you think this is… Twitter? |

Given the other topic, I’m leaning more towards: # Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Twitter? What was that? Was it like MySpace? |

Anyone else got a Mastadon account? |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
Not I. |
Stuart Swales (8827) 1349 posts |
Of course, need to hang out with Geo-ex-Twitter. |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
Only vaguely heard of Mastodon before. Been taking a look at Wikipedia on the subject. Interesting, may follow up. Thanks folks. |

https://med-mastodon.com/@gjsprague/109365304761246941 (not me, just funny) Imagine the whole line’s a link: |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
Ah now. Interesting. I saw that on a fiend’s facebook page this morning, and wondered what it was all about… 8~) Yes, I realized that the whole line was the link. |
Rick Murray (539) 13806 posts |
Wow it’s slow. Must be really struggling to scale up for dealing with a few million ex-Twitter users. I have an idea. Why don’t we write a simple social networking system in BASIC that runs on RISC OS? Ought to be a weekend project, right? Then we can pitch that as a replacement to Twitter. <hides> |
Simon Willcocks (1499) 509 posts |
Someone with skilz and a server could set up their own RISC OS instance… Just saying. |
Stuart Swales (8827) 1349 posts |
My last tweet was: “Well, we took Mastodon down with us” |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
Presumably taking some popular servers down isn’t quite the same as taking the whole system down? (I’m very new to the idea of Mastodon – be ready for ignorant thunks… 8~) |
Simon Willcocks (1499) 509 posts |
You’re right, it’s decentralised, like Usenet. |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
The URL is what made me wonder – med-mastodon.com looks awfully like a central point. Don’t know how that works. |
Dave Higton (1515) 3497 posts |
It’s called ChatCube. But it isn’t written in BASIC. |
Simon Willcocks (1499) 509 posts |
@Clive As I understand it, it’s lots of servers and they can access each other’s posts. Presumably links refer back to the originator’s server. |
Rick Murray (539) 13806 posts |
That’s a walled garden. Not the same. |
Dave Higton (1515) 3497 posts |
Why? For one thing, you can converse with Telegram contacts, and that’s multi-platform. I do think it meets your specification. |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
@Simon And presumably med-mastodon.com is just one of many points of entry, that just happens to have a rather impressive URL? Further investigation clearly called for… |

Posted on Mastodon: People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment… You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you’re complaining there’s a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!;) That’s a walled garden. Because unless I’m mistaken, you need to be signed in and active in order to read anything on Chatcube (no idea about Telegraph, I’m just talking Chatcube here). On the other hand, I pop by from time to time to see what VinceH has tweeted about (often extracting urine from Ree-Smog 👍👍). I do not have a Twitter account. See the difference? |
Dave Higton (1515) 3497 posts |
You have to have an account, yes, but I don’t think that makes it a walled garden. You should try it. It’s not painful at all. |
