In a forum that wasn’t Aldershot and a topic that was originally about something else, it was written:
At least you attempt to look like the good guys. “Can’t toss all these migrants to the middle of Africa because it’s against British law? Well, we’ll just blame ‘Europe’ as a pretext for throwing away the Humans Rights stuff we helped write, and then pass some emergency legislation to allow us to do exactly this because Stop The Boats (just repeat that mantra over and over and don’t think).” The comments in various Daily Mail articles are utterly depressing, and more than a few want Braverman to be the next PM. Edit: I forgot, the response of the Conservative Party deputy chair who basically said to just ignore the ruling. What’s the point of rule of law if those who are supposed to be upholding it treat it as optional when it conflicts with their own prejudices? |

Not what I come here to read about. |

You don’t have to read it if you don’t want to, David. Some of us are perfectly happy to read this stuff. And, of course, agree with every word Rick writes (on this sort of subject if not necessarily every other – although just now I can’t think of an example). |

It was, after all, totally off-topic for the other forums and totally in line with the “nothing to do with RO” conditions of Aldershot. |

I think it’s more a case of having come to the realisation that their lies weren’t even half believable and switching to the Boris tactic of bluster all the time. |

As has been pointed out repeatedly, it’s very hard not to because it pollutes the “recent posts” page which is certainly my main access to the forum. |

There’s a recent posts page? |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
The top “Forums” page highlights recent posts, which is the equivalent. And most of the posts all over the site are of no interest so far as I’m concerned, but I take a quick peek and then move on if they’re obviously irrelevant to me. The idea that every post apart from the few that have nothing to do with RISCOS will be of interest seems a little outlandish, to put it mildly. So if one isn’t going to read loads of irrelevant posts, one has to spot the irrelevance as quickly as possible and move on – from irrelevant RISCOS posts as well as from non-RISCOS ones. The original posts that prompted Rick’s first post on this thread really were naughtily off topic in a different thread, but this is Aldershot, specifically for off-topic posts – whole off-topic threads indeed. Surely it’s possible to not even bother to look at Aldershot posts if you hate off-topic so much? |
Simon Willcocks (1499) 513 posts |
Perhaps there could be a latest relevant posts section, excluding Aldershot? Or simply exclude Aldershot from the latest posts? |

As has been pointed out repeatedly, it’s very hard not to because it pollutes the “recent posts” page which is certainly my main access to the forum. Some observations: 1. “pollutes” is emotive language. It says you dont like it. That is not an argument that cuts much ice. 2. Aldershot is an appropriate place in which to express controversial views. 3. Aldershot should not be included in recent posts. This may not be easy to arrange but everything in Aldershot “pollutes” recent posts. 4. And, Steve, you may consider this a little unkind, but if you are mainly using the forum via “recent posts” you are not keeping up. |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
I’ve never seen this “Latest Posts” page – unless it’s the top Forum page, which serves that purpose admirably anyway, and on which it’s perfectly easy to ignore Aldershot altogether. Or indeed any other topic in which one has no interest, although if I’ve got time I do take a quick look at any new posts even in areas where I’m not likely to have an interest, just in case something interesting pops up unexpectedly. |

’ve never seen this “Latest Posts” page – unless it’s the top Forum page On NetSurf scroll down the bottom and there is an entry “Recent posts” underneath the entry for “Tests” |

I’m glad to see that arguing about forum etiquette is vastly more popular than political rants, as it should be. :-) |
Rick Murray (539) 13840 posts |
Call that a rant? ;)
Keeping up with what? The Recent Posts is pretty much exactly how I see what’s new in the forum. I find it so useful, I even found a way of patching in a sort-of-similar function into my own forum, ‘cos wandering around looking at each subforum in turn and trying to remember what was there before is kind of dumb. Recent Posts does all I want, and unlike an RSS feed it doesn’t need an external application.
There should be an option. But given the blutack and gaffer tape holding the forum together, I think it’s probably better if people who don’t like the off topic stuff learn to use their scroll wheel lest anybody fiddle too much with the innards of the forum. Plus, there’s way more important stuff that should be done first, like the issue of deleted users and their ability to continue posting.
Hmm… Says not to use “pollutes”, uses “pollutes”. ;) Honestly, though, how hard is it to just skip over content you’re not interested in? I’m guessing many of you don’t spend much time on other sites? Because the levels of embedded advertising (or nice empty placeholders for those using browsers with better blocking abilities) on sites elsewhere is getting ridiculous. One learns to scroll/swipe, and also to install Firefox and UBlock Origin (etc).
Not too controversial. Best to keep it family friendly, eh? Now, back to Norse legends which is sort of where we were in the other thread. The bad guys in “Ragnarok” (Netflix series) are the Jotnar (Jötnar? Jøtnar? it feels like there should be something fiddling with the ‘o’ in that word), which seems to be translated in the subtitles as “Giants”… but they’re not “giant”, they’re more like supernatural humans. |

Oh, yes, there’s Recent Posts. Never noticed it, never felt the need to visit it – because I already know about recent posts because the forums with them in are highlighted green…click on “view” and there’s the most recent post in that forum, read or skip that one, visit the forum to check if there are any others in there I’ve not read. Again, those are nicely highlighted. What’s Recent Posts for? I’ve done that already. All of thirty seconds on a typical visit. |
Paul Sprangers (346) 524 posts |
Exactly the same here. |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8170 posts |
Is it just me that gets a special display where the new posts cause a green icon on the forum on the main page and then entering that forum shows all threads with new posts as a green icon? Oh, I see Clive and Paul also have the colour feature. I don’t see what function recent posts has, except to mix all the sub-forums into one confusing, intertwined, list. |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8170 posts |
Or not, if the forum covers stuff you want to know about. IF, THEN, ELSE… |
Rick Murray (539) 13840 posts |
Grouping them together so you don’t have to go looking (green dot or otherwise). It’s bookmarked on my phone. When the page appears, I flick down to a message I remember, then read the list backwards to see what’s new. There’s Clive’s thirty seconds. Or, if the first post is one I remember, I know there’s nothing new since my last visit. Less than five seconds…not that the time taken is that important really.
Hmm, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. ;) Intertwined, yes. Confusing? Not really. |

Agree to Disagree – a good thought – otherwise we have wars :-(( Like my vicar is better than your vicar. |

Aha! There’s the explanation. Phone browsing again. I don’t do that at all. I don’t suppose I ever will. |

Doesn’t everyone use bookmarks to get to their frequently viewed pages? As for Recent Posts: just because someone does it differently to you, it doesn’t mean that’s wrong. |
