In a thread in “another place”, Andy remarked:
which prompted me to remember the Vietnamese Street Food restaurant just down the road. It is called Pho, but apparently this is pronounced like the French feu (I looked it up). This may or may not be connected with “fire” and cooking, remembering that Vietnam was a French colony, but my grasp of the language is non-existent to say the least! If it were pronounced as faux, then the service would be effectively called “false news”, a concept which continues to be topical to this day. I thought this was mildly interesting, but knew that Steve wouldn’t be interested, so am posting it here. Thanks, Andy, useful and interesting information. |
