Solution or problem?

People may be following the Crowdstrike issue. Normally Crowdstrike is a protection mechanism, in this instance people with so called “lights-out” access to their devices are probably much happier than those without because the “protection” totally blocking access to OS critical files doesn’t work out too well if your remote access is onto the GUI that BSOD’s Reading the news, the main crisis is over – “CBBC is back on air” :) |

Yay! Maybe. I dunno. Question is, why the [BLEEP] are they running what is clearly mission critical stuff on a Windows box that not only has unfettered access to the outside world, but also has automatic unverified (by them, their IT dept) updates? You don’t need to have all the latest updates on mission critical things as they roll out as you just don’t have those machines directly connected to the internet. I’m sure you, Steve, have had this argument too many times with various suppliers (and no opportunity to shove a cattle prod in places that would make the trainee nurses faint). |

You can choose to not look, my(er, sort of) phone does an irritating “plink” when a Teams message comes in, and there have been many.
They quote 6 URLs for EU, “unfettered” access has a standard reply, and that’s before I hear about it :) |

Similar to TGIF, but tailored to my situation. |

Ah. As a former teacher (among sundry other things) that one I know. IDWAA. |

All I can do is sit back and laugh at all the Windows lusers unable to work today, while I happily carry on the toil on my Linux box on the hottest day of they year. Although I did spent two hours this afternoon in the pool with the boys, as its now the summer holidays. |

Speaking of a different kind of “solution or problem”, I notice the socials stuff on the right guides you to ‘f’ or ‘X’. Problem is, if you don’t have a dead blue tweety bird account, all you’ll see these days is a request to sign in. So more antisocial than social? Might I suggest something a little less user hostile? https://bsky.app/profile/xkcd.com Note – I don’t “do” social media, but this one seems to have some interesting things, is created by the bloke who started Twitter, can be viewed without logging in, and of course it isn’t run by [REST OF SENTENCE REDACTED]. |

Bluesky is a bit sparse. A number of the Musk-haters there are considering migrating back to the hellsite. Mastodon is even worse. |

I’ve been locked out of my dead blue bird account because I won’t tell them my date of birth. Not that that’s exactly a closely guarded secret, but wtf? None of your business, Mr Muskrat. Good opportunity to depart the scene, bye! |

It’s taken a while, but the rest of the world is catching up with me. |

I could try that, but they might know different – accurately or otherwise. Still, no harm done…but maybe having said Bye I’ll leave it at that anyway. I only ever got an account for political reasons when I was a parliamentary candidate, and I’ve continued sharing political garbage, but I don’t think I’m influencing anyone and I don’t actually create any posts of my own, haven’t for years. |

I think the age question is because various governments want them to attempt to be less evil to children. One of my Google accounts wanted me to provide a scan of my ID or it would restrict my access in a way appropriate for children. Which it probably has now done, I don’t know, I rarely use it. No way in hell I’m scanning my passport to send who knows where. They can shove that idea in a painful place. The other account, the one my phones are synced to, didn’t ask – perhaps because I’d have to have had it set up before I was born if I was a child? ;)
So, I’d imagine, was the blue bird in the beginning.
I rather wish companies and organisations such as ROOL would cease and desist from using the dead bird as a means of communication. It’s now only useful to people who have an account (or can rustle up a working Nitter). For saying “we know there’s a problem with the server, we’re working on it, blame CrowdStrike” or “we are unable to provide copious amounts of tea today, we’re sorry, blame CrowdStrike”, it is utterly useless for the majority of people. And, yes, CrowdStrike will be The Excuse for about the next week or so. You’re out playing rounders with your children? Or sinking the third pint at 3pm? Don’t say the code is compiling, just mumble “bloody CrowdStrike” and everybody will understand. Even if you don’t work in tech.
That’s why I didn’t suggest it. It is too different, too tied up in weird politics, and too depending on the generosity of complete strangers. I’ve seen a few people defect to Mastodon and, well, a year(ish) later and those servers are 404. Big sky is attempting to be what the blue bird would have been, had the giant phallus not fired everybody/broken it/trashed his own investment. I’m honestly surprised it’s still functioning.
Just because I don’t have an account doesn’t mean I don’t look at other people’s stuff. Someone around here used to not hold back on telling certain Tory scum what he thought… |
