The virtue of books, or clay tablets, is that when a man dies his published scribblings become objects, which, whatever their market value, are recognized in law as chattels of his estate. So what about websites, blogs or tweets? Do foresighted authors enjoin their heirs posthumously to maintain them? Information can turn to worthless dust as surely as heirlooms in the attic end up as woodlouse crap. Brighton used to be full of second-hand bookshops – remember them? – because it was the capital of costa geriatrica. Most of their stock was only of nostalgic ( specialist ) interest. The web is full of such sites. Are there any worthies out there saving obsolescent gems for the benefit of future generations? I had intended to post this on the Aldershot forum, but one cannot say that this a topic without the remotest connection to RISC OS, alas. Never mind. |
