Hmmm...

Wanted to burn a CD. So I started up my NAS box. What do I find there? The box keeps crashing. It works in Safe Mode. It works in VGA mode (it ain’t fun using XP/Nero in 640×480) but if I switch to any other mode, it just hangs. If I’m real lucky, it will hang with the display in text mode showing a screenful of “P” or somesuch.
Sounds like the graphics card is caca.

Can XP run without one, or will it freak out? I mostly use it via VNC. But I’d like at least 1024×768 or it’s just hard to use. I might nuke the drivers in safe mode, reboot, see if that works.

I’m setting up that P4 2.4GHz box with DarkEdition right now. If it will also work with the USB DVD writer (my netbook only does, for reading), then I can fire up the NAS box again some day for about long enough to copy off the data, then I can just use the machine for spare parts (like a full size IDE DVD-writer), two IDE harddiscs…

Can you enable Remote Desktop on the XP box then use Andrew Sellors’ !RDPClient (http://www.orac2.demon.co.uk/software/rdpclient/rdpclient.html)? It works well for me with versions of Windows up to Server 2008 and Windows 7 (not tested with later versions here yet).
