I believe that the Normans invented the distinction between Grande and Petite Bretagne.

I thought it had something to do with the migration of Britons from Wales/Devon/Cornwall around the 4th – 7th century AD. That sort of thing leads to the (dodgy) Norman claims to the English throne that gave us 1066 etc.
