pfSense

Just noticed this on pfsense blog.
Awesome! I’ve been hoping for pfSense on ARM for ages.
It’s released in November (ETA) so still a little wait, but enough time to save up ;-)

The SG-1000 has been released by the way, quite nice.
You can’t do any IPS (snort/suricata) and it can’t handle anything really heavy.
But I have it working with 80Mbit down and 10Mbit up (that’s what speed I have) and it performs better than my netgear router did. (lower latency)
Also get reliable VPN in and out which is great.

It’s available in the UK

You can also stick a wifi dongle on it via a USB otg connector and that works (as long as your wifi dongle supports it)

With pfSense having gone down the closed source and commercial route the fork that many developers moved to is probably more interesting.
OPNSense has an interesting to-do list and I suspect a Pi with two NICs would be a likely target.

Thanks Steve, I’ve used a Pi with two NICs (one USB). It’s not fantastic obviously, but it would be good enough for a basic firewall setup.
That was a PI 2, so maybe the 3 (and 4?) are better.
I think ARM support starts with BSD 11, so it will be interesting to see where there first target is, as you said a Pi with two NICs would be a great target.
Definitely be taking a look at that.
