Pi Case

Title should really be “Pi Case and Speakers” So as some of you have probably noticed I’m getting back into RISC OS after something of a break and am setting up a new workstation. Its going to be in an old writers bureau which has various little pockets for envelopes and such like. I don’t tend to use envelopes very much so am planning on filling the little pockets with small computers and other gadgets. To that end – does anyone know of a Raspberry Pi case that I could use for my new RISC OS computer that would also have space for a 2.5" hard drive/SSD (and usb to SATA adapter) and would fit into a 10cm wide gap? Or should I just build one out of lego…? Also…does anyone know the best way of getting sound out of the Pi – I will have a monitor (eventually) but it doesn’t have speakers so no audio over HDMI. I was thinking of using some bookshelf speakers I have hanging around but they are bare-wire connections so I was wondering how best to drive them? They do have built in amplifiers so could I just hook up the 3.5mm jack on the Pi to them? |

Replying to your own questions is probably Not Cool but I have since found these on sale by CJE Micros: I’ve emailed for a bit more info and taken the dimensions of the smallest case to see if it will fit in my bureau! :—) |

I tried this config file with my Pi 1 a while ago when I connected my old Logitech speakers to the audio out jack socket (I now just use HDMI for sound and vision). I think this worked after a couple of reboots after uncommenting the appropriate lines. Worth a try. hdmi_force_hotplug=1 |

If you can get hold of one, a PlusBerry Pi on it’s end, would probably fit in that gap. It has a built in SATA connector that works under RISC OS. |

OK I have been home and measured the gaps and settled on one that is 20cm wide, 14cm deep and 7.5cm high. I might be building my own case I think (perhaps to incorporate a PiDrive instead of a normal hard drive…?) There are two larger compartments but I am thinking of putting the speakers into those – I’m not allowed to use my big speakers because it will take up too much space in the dining room. To that end if anyone wants and Microlab Solo 1C speakers please get in touch! |

I bought a Pi Drive from their crowdfunding page and mine doesn’t work with RISC OS, although there’s no reason it shouldn’t – it just doesn’t! There’s some info about it here: https://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/9/topics/3439 |

OK I’ll avoid that then… There is another one available on Scan which might be better: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom-pi-102-raspberry-pi-usb-to-msata-converter-board-supports-sata-i-ii-iii-msata-ssds-includes-mo Also depending on the enclosure I choose (most likely one of the aluminium ones from Maplin such as Aluminium Box 10) it might mean I can have it somewhere else in the case and still have full access to the GPIO if I need to… |
