I was watching some music videos on YouTube when one, a Chinese orchestra, had this: It’s like an Urhu with a fan or…? Any idea what instrument this is? Full size image at http://i.imgur.com/ErOzkv1.jpg |

I note it has four strings and a bridge. It is like an oriental viola da gamba!! The URL of the original might help. This is an Erhu – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA4bjEBYkSw I have this as a Violin Concerto – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOuPpyuqcOE |

I think this is it – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozrMYNpieWQ I say “think” as I’m currently listening to a two hour long Nightwish compilation. ;-) I know of the Urhu, it features quite prominently in the work of Alan (a female) especially the song Megumi No Ame. But just as there are different types of guitar, there might be different types of Urhu… |

Here’s Alan, in Chinese this time. Pretty impressive staging, simple yet effective (all that fabric!) – imagine if East Asia took part in Eurovision. Her singing style, by the way, she’s Tibetan. |

Gotta give credit to this guy who Erhu’d along to the rock/metal version of Canon: |

The instrument originally queried is a Gehu, a modern hybrid, a cello equivalent. http://www.chinamusic.eu/chinese-music/chinese-orchestra/bowed-strings/ US$3,465.00 http://www.easonmusicstore.com/categories/Gehu/11 How cello like is this larger version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0uIGvvC0SU |
