Excellent! This reminds me of Voltaire’s put-down of Bossuet’s Discours sur l’histoire universelle . Oui, oui, et sur plusieurs d’autres choses. |

My view is that we’re all autistic – it is, after all, a continuum – just more or less, or in a different way. When it interferes with our life functionality, that’s when a diagnosis may help provide some appropriate support, but otherwise we are just regarded, more or less, as “odd” bu**ers (whoops, there go my asterisks again!). Well, not me, of course, I’m just “normal”! |

Buffers? Bummers? Butlers? Buskers? Buglers? Butters? Buzzers? Bumpers? Burners? Burgers? Um, um, um…
Define “normal”. |

If you have to put it in quotes, you’re probably not normal xD |

Probably buffers in my case
For you, you. For me, me. For Clive, him. For James – who knows? I obviously do not have his Jungian skills in people assessment! Do I have to use an “irony” tag here? I am immediately suspicious of anyone who claims to be an expert. This, to me, suggests a lack of social awareness unless supported by independent citations. The fact that many autist(e)s cope perfectly well with everyday life does not negate the theory that we are all autistic to a (greater or lesser) degree. But I don’t accuse any individual of being “autistic”- my experience of special education informs me that a “label” or diagnosis is only useful if it signals a course of action which can improve “outcomes” for the individual concerned. It’s a bit like dyslexia in that regard! Being “labelled” is useless, being provided with positive assistance as a result is useful. Like teaching a man to fish! PS: Not that I would know anything about that, leading a life of luxury on my various pensions with houses in two countriesbut with no fishing! |

But which of you is accessing my website from Iceland? Or is it someone who lurks but doesn’t post? Or is it just coincidence that an access from Iceland appeared just now, and a couple of accesses to “Voices” at about the same time? Not much else happened about then, unless Servage wasn’t reporting everything (Which I suspect they sometimes don’t. Servage’s logging isn’t very sophisticated, nor, I suspect, very reliable! And I’ve not set anything up myself.) |

It may be just that someone on a cross-channel ferry is accessing your site, as there is a “sargasso sea” bit in the channel where one’s mobile says “Welcome to Iceland”. Useful to know about/avoid, as I’m sure charges would be exorbitant! Just, perhaps, one of those strange geographical anomalies which we don’t really understand! But don’t ’phone back! |

I like the Ex = has been, spert/spurt = drip under pressure definition :) That said people keep calling me an expert on quite a few things. I think that’s more of an indictment of their lack of knowledge than an endorsement of my prowess. |

I do have an Icelandic friend – but I happen to know she’s in Germany at the moment. |

Real ale? |
John Williams (567) 768 posts |
I was being serious: There is a spot in the channel (Portsmouth/St Malo) where, for some incomprehensible reason, one’s ’phone, if left on, displays “Welcome to Iceland”! Perhaps it’s a bounce off some ****osphere, but it could prove costly to use! |
Clive Semmens (2335) 3276 posts |
I never doubted it. On the other hand, I don’t actually know about anyone on such a ferry, any more than I know about anyone in Iceland, who’s likely to be looking at my site; and the population of Iceland is many times greater than the number of people on such a ferry at any moment. |
James Wheeler (3283) 344 posts |
I have no normal (that’s the way I like it and if I settle, I almost reinvent myself) and my Jungian skills are super slow. :(
I wouldn’t say I was suspicious of experts, but I would expect them to walk me through it. I prefer empirical evidence that would give a glimpse into their thinking process that leads them to a specific conclusion. I’m less fussed about details and facts. If an idea or suggestion is novel, I’d have a tough time not throwing caution to the wind. I can be a little credulous at times, but a few embarrassing incidents are encouraging me to be a little more cautious and a little more critical. |

I personally have (personally and thankfully) no knowledge of your prowess, which I am sure is intimidatingly magnificent, but have been inculcated with your efforts in support of Real Ale. I hope, despite this, that we can remain “friends”! Cheers! |
