Wimp retroactively acknowledging Shift key

On the Mac, if I drag a file and then realise I want to make a copy (instead of just moving), I hold down the Option (Alt) key. It does not matter if I hold the Option key before the drag starts or during the drag, Finder still acknowledges my decision. It would be nice if the RISC OS Wimp did the same thing. I often find myself dragging a file in the Wimp – and then realising I actually want to move the file, not just copy. So, during the drag, I press and hold the Shift key but unfortunately it’s not acknowledged and the drag continues to be seen as a copy operation. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Wimp acknowledged the Shift key during a drag? |

You are very much not alone Gavin. |

Oops! I knew I had read this thread in the past but couldn’t find it so thought it was worth “wishlisting” again. |

Also, I don’t think it’s the Wimp – I think it’s the Filer. Meaning, if you fix it in one filer, let’s say ADFS Filer, you won’t get the same fix in another, say SDFS Filer. At least, that’s how I understand it. |

Err, if it’s dragging files between Filer windows, yes it’s the Filer but one fix will do it for all. ADFSFiler, SCSIFSFiler, SDFSFiler, etc all just concern the iconbar icons – the icons just *Filer_OpenDir the appropriate root directory and all the window stuff is done by the Filer module itself. The only place where the different modules come into play is drags to an xxFS iconbar icon. Actually, it’s high time we shot the different xxFSFiler modules and had one filer module that did iconbar icons for all. It’s highly tedious to have to write a new module for each FS that simply provides an icon you can click on. But that’s another rant. |

Indeed. Volunteers welcome! |

It is fair to say that the Filer should be able to provide an icon for a simple file system. There are many that require their own menu items so it’s only going to help in the trivial cases.
That’s far from all an FSFiler has to do:

Yes, but there are more filers than that, aren’t there? LanMan, NFS, etc. I thought at least some of them implemented their filer windows, too. |

Sorry to resurrect such an old post, but reading this reminded me that I’d forgotten to put this functionality into Fat32Fs. So if you want to do this then you’d better get V1.42!!!! Jeff |

I hope you then auto-open the root after saving to it! |

No, I’ve auto-opened it before saving to it! |

I think that’s a very equitable distribution of smug. ;-) |
