Close the Aldershot forum

BUT – would anyone be annoyed that Aldershot posts were missing from the RSS or HTML recent posts lists?

Speaking as a source of the “noise” I can say it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.
I will say that the suggestion of closing the forum is a wonderful example of pointing both barrels of a shotgun at your foot and wondering where the pain came from since closure means there’s nowhere to point people at when they are off-topic.
I do find this specific thread delightfully ironic though.

I would have said “maybe” as that’s usually how I read the posts. I would have asked if it was feasible to have a “Recent Posts” and an otherwise hidden “Recent Posts With Crap” option.
I would have. But since it clearly bothered some people too much, I’ve dropped out of Aldershot completely and only visit here a couple of times a day now. Ah well, more time to get through my backlog of unwatched animé episodes. ;-)

However, one small request if you are planning to poke around the forum code. Gravatar. http → https. I filed it as a bug report ages ago (https://www.riscosopen.org/tracker/tickets/439) and at the time checked the links were exactly the same, only with the ‘s’ added. Then the forum can finally have a padlock instead of the big exclamation mark for mixed SSL/non-SSL content.

As noted earlier, would it not keep all happy if Aldershot was omitted from ‘Recent posts’ but left in RSS, given that forums can be individually subscribed or not with RSS? Is that possible?

If I were add such a feature and flag Aldershot as not-in-feeds, it would clearly make some people happy. It would still be visible from the boards list of course and accessible by all the normal methods.

No. I wouldn’t miss Aldershot or Test if they didn’t appear in recent posts. I’m assuming they could be subscribed to individually if someone was waiting for a reply to a post.

The idea behind Aldershot is a good one.

Perhaps Aldershot should only be visible to those logged in?

Someone sent an e-mail pointing me at this thread and it’s a decent feature request – essentially, be able to mark a forum as something that shouldn’t appear in feeds, be they RSS or HTML equivalents (“Recent Posts”).

As Rick suggested – or “would have” suggested ;) – two variations (one with, one without) seems to be a sensible suggestion.

If you are going to twiddle with the RSS stuff, though, can I ask for one little feature request? That the link in the RSS feed is to the actual post, not the start of the thread?
