Forum logins

Could logins to the forum be made permanent? It’s a minor pain having to log in every time. Or even maybe a 7 day cookie instead of a session one? Cheers :) |

Certainly I also find the current timeout (4 hours or so?) very short, and a major pain to log in very frequently. Any increase would be a benefit. Please? |

Or to be able to log in with the username and password in the URL. |

For info, it was just last year when the timeout was increased from one to four hours. There’s also an old thread here.) |

I could increase it to 24 hours, but the 5am auto-restart/log rotation will always clear out Hub and thus, clear out any logged in users. Since moving to the new server environment both Steve and I have noticed occasional instances where we seem to get logged out of Hub at random, though, which looks like a(nother) DRb bug. I’ve not had time to look into it and the intermittent nature will make it hard to track down too. I see a symptom of this in the admin interface for Hub, whereby the same user appears in the “currently logged in” list more than once. |

24 hours would be a worthwhile improvement, I think. Unless you consider it would cause other problems – I would hate to increase your workload! |

Theoretically done, though I’ve not looked at the random sudden logout bug I mention above so YMMV. |

Would it be possible to add one’s username and password to the login URL so that we arrive ready logged in? To be used only from suficiently secure locations, of course. |

I don’t know what you mean. |
Dave Higton (281) 668 posts |
What I mean is something like: http://www.riscosopen.org/login?user=myusername&password=mypassword so that I can store it as a link in my browser, and clicking on that will log me in automatically. Or at least take me to the login page with the username and password fields filled in already. |

You mean under RO? What browser are you using? Login details are saved as above with at least one Android browser. |

Netsurf doesn’t remember form details. I’ve programmed one of the “special” keys on my keyboard to enter my email address, saves a bit of typing at least. |
Dave Higton (281) 668 posts |
Yes, NetSurf under RISC OS. It’s easier at work because I use Firefox and I only have to type the first letter of my name into the username box, then the rest is filled in immediately for me. No such luxury with NetSurf. I know that in principle it’s insecure to have a login like that, but it’s something I would only use from home where I have physical security over the site. |

It sounds like Kev Wells’s Form Filler might help. |

Thaanks for the plug Trevor Johnson, also if you have complete control over the computer it might be worth having your login details on one button e.g login@example.cco.uk\password Which on the login for here will fill both fields in. |
