If you have a taskobey file:

dir <obey$dir>
do amu MAKEDIR=<obey$dir> all

and the following makefile in the same directory:

all::
    @echo $(MAKEDIR)
    @echo
    cat $(MAKEDIR)

then if the files are in the root directory eg, the files are in the ram disc root directory, then the makefile will fail. If the files are not in the root directory the makefile succeeds.

When in the root directory the $ is removed from the end of MAKEDIR – a $ in the middle of the path doesn’t have a problem.
