HDMI oddity

I have a monitor, with various inputs, I usually use it connected to the DVI port where the colour seems to display correctly – as it does when using the D-Sub port. I had cause to use the HDMI port recently and discovered the colours are different. Via HDMI I don’t see the light grey lines and boxes on this site like the box around the ‘Search forums’ heading. I presume it’s a gamma issue but any changes I make to the monitor makes no difference. Does anyone else have this issue with HDMI – I’m just wondering if it is a peculiarity of my monitor. |

It sounds like it could be a quirk with the monitor – if gamma isn’t fixing it, maybe it’s something like the difference between “full” and “limited” RGB range. Computers are designed to work with full range (0-255), TV/video sources are typically limited (16-235), i.e. 16 will be black and 235 will be white. Your monitor might be treating the HDMI input as limited range. What machine are you using? If it’s a Pi, are you using an OS version which is able to control the GPU mode, or are you forcing a particular mode in config.txt? IIRC the HDMI signalling should be able to indicate the colour range to the monitor (assuming the monitor pays attention to the information), or it might be that the monitor treats DMT and CEA modes differently (DMT is mainly for computers, so should be treated as full range, while CEA is mainly for video modes, so might be treated as limited range by default) |

Thanks Jeffrey that fixed it. There’s a ‘Range Extension’ setting for HDMI deep in the menus which I suppose is EIZO’s name for ‘limited RGB’ anyway switching it off fixed things. |
