Connecting to an Econet Network

Hello all, I’m after a bit of help if possible please. I’m reasonably handy with RISC OS, but have never configured the networking side of it. I guess the last thing my teachers wanted back in the day was a bunch of students who were handy with networking! Anyway, I find myself needing to connect a couple of Risc OS 3.11 machines to a pre-existing Econet network and don’t know where to start, however I do know that it has worked in the past. I’ve done a bit of Googling and although there’s a bit of information out there about Econet, I can’t find the info I need. A lot of it also relates to later versions of the OS. There’s a BBC Master Compact already connected to the NW, which works fine, and also a daisy-chain of connectors with 5-pin din sockets available to plug my machines into. Storage is provided by a Filestore E40S and Filestore E01S: I’ve got as far as plugging a computer into the NW via a 5-pin DIN connector, and opening !Configure but no further. One other bit of info I noted is that when turned on the A440/1 says something like the workstation number is invalid so defaulting to 1. I guess this may be important! I also possibly have a username and password although I don’t know for sure if they’re right or needed. So, if anyone has the time, please could you point me in the right direction – even a link to the documentation so that I can work it out for myself would be great. Many thanks, Simon. |

I would just plug in one machine to the FileStore to begin with. You may have multiple machines set to station 1. The default FS station is 254. If you try to use the Net icon to log on, you should be away. Default username is syst but the password is unlikely to be the default of blank! You need to find the ‘SetStation’ utility which will allow a machine serial number to be changed. |

Yep, you need SetStation. Version 2.03 appears to be the latest; it’s posted here (sets.zip in the 5th post; other links are to earlier versions). I’m actually in the process of updating SetStation but my current build is only for RISC OS 5. Once I’ve finished adding 3.1 support things might be a bit easier to track down :) |

Many thanks folks, I’m next able to take a look at this on Friday so I’ll see how I get on. I have SetStation on a floppy disc ready to go. Cheers :-) |
