Hi I am considering to buy Impression-X on !Store. I noted that the website does not exist anymore and the version (5.78) seems to exist for a long time now. Thank you for your feedback Regards François |

The fifth update since Richard released Impression-X at the London show in 2014 is nearly ready (he said at Wakefield that it would be a few weeks). The manual (based on CC’s original manual) is also nearly ready. For the price of £60 you get a total of four updates or 12 months, whichever is longer. Plus you can use the software indefinitely: you only need to subscribe again if you want further updates. I have written an article for Archive (and one has been published in WROCC) about the history of Impression and its current status. Your post has prompted me to put it on line here (now uploaded). |

Do you know that the ‘Big Ben Club’ has a RISC OS show near Amsterdam – Saturday May 12 2018. Also the ‘London Heathrow’ RO show might be easier for you – Two hours from Brussels to London then train to Heathrow. [edit1] Has anyone ever run a Coach trip to the ‘Big Ben Club’ show from the UK? [edit2] |

It is worth knowing in advance that the Big Ben eXperience show (nr Amersterdam) is rather more of a “user meet-up” event. I love it, because it is by far the friendliest and most relaxed event, but it isn’t an “exhibition” in the sense of the UK shows. Typically, the members bring their computers, and form a large rectangle of tables in the middle of the hall. They each set up and connect to a local network, much like a PC “LAN party”, almost. They then show each other what they have been up to, or try and get problems fixed, or look to help each other. A regular group comes from Belgium, and I have even seen people from France or Germany there. There is a meal afterwards, too, at a nearby indonesian/chinese restaurant. Companies are welcome to exhibit – typically round the edges of the hall. However, there are usually only a small number of these (ie. it isn’t representative of the RISC OS scene as a whole). Any visiting companies are also encouraged to give a talk/presentation. Historically, we have always tried to support the event, despite high costs (cross-channel ferry costs from north of england aren’t cheap, plus hotels etc). Last year, medical issues prevented us attending unfortunately. The enthusiasm of the Dutch userbase always shines through, and it is always a really good time to go and see everyone. Big thanks to all involved in running it. |

If you’re a beer drinker (quite common in Belgium :)) then you might enjoy a tour of a few local establishments in Wakefield itself and sourrounding area (transport permitting). As Colin said the London show is easier to get to, but an overnight stay is more expensive and the air is fresher in Yorkshire – to be honest it’s hard to think of anywhere that doesn’t have fresher air than London. |

I’m booked to attend the Big Ben Club meeting this year, so do please consider making the trip across from Brussels. The Wakefield and London shows have a similar number of exhibiters, and London is certainly closer for you. There are many interesting places to visit in Yorkshire, however, if you want to make a longer trip. York, especially, is a must-see: castle, cathedral, medieval city walls, interesting shopping streets, Vikings, railway museum. And if you’re not so keen on cities, the countryside is beautiful. |

Yes, do come across to the London Show this year, Saturday 27th October! :-)
Err, that seems an odd way to go! Train to London St Pancras, tube down to Vauxhall, train to Feltham. The St Giles Hotel is not a bad price for a London hotel, IIRC it was £45 including breakfast last year, and is a decent base for visiting London as it is on a direct train line into the centre of town (Waterloo station).
A surprisingly large number of places are worse according to yesterday’s WHO report – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-43964341 |

The article is about particulate pollution1 and doesn’t seem to mention the sulphuric/nitric oxide pollutants responsible for that wonderful orange “soup” that is so visible on a summers day looking down over the bowl from Hampstead hill. I’m used to the taste that hits me as I step off the train each August (Great British Beer Festival) 1 Which is a fairly even level across city environments |

Hi all, A year later… and there has been no update. Impression-X seemed to be stuck on 5.78. Feel like the “subscription” promising a year of free updates or 4 updates is a fake! ANy news on the evolution of Impression-X? Thank you François |

Hi François When I spoke to Richard at last year’s London show, he explained that he’d been made redundant and that his priorities at that time had changed. However, he hasn’t abandoned the project and continues with it in slow time. |

Feel like the “subscription” promising a year of free updates or 4 updates is a fake! It is not quite as bad as that: it was 12 months or 4 updates whichever is the longer. You also get to continue using the software after your subscription expires, you just won’t get any further updates unless you resubscribe. You can subscribe using !Store as well. |

Hum, one year is pretty long. |

If it does what you want it to, and doesn’t crash losing your edits (or, worse, edits and automatic backup, like one version of MS Word did to me), why not buy it? |

I think that’s called Ovation Pro. Speaking as a past purchaser of both CC and Mr. Pillings products. Don’t tend to do hard copy these days1. If you need a product that works then buy one, when there’s a working alternative you could buy that. 1 These days doing anything that needs a hard copy is pretty much confined to furnishing the finance department at work with another bit of dead tree, so they can copy the content I printed from a spreadsheet2 into a spreadsheet to process my expenses. 2 It took them a few years to realise the whole IT department was using a spreadsheet instead of manually filling in a (badly) photocopied form. |

Additional benefit – there’s a Windows version too. Of course, if you only really need simple DTP facilities, you could try the older Ovation. It’s on !Store and it’s free. |

Is this the place to ask about the workings of Impression (or Ovation)? |
David Feugey (2125) 2709 posts |
No :) You can download Ovation and Impression Style for free on !Store |
Rick Murray (539) 13850 posts |
I think that depends upon what he means by “the workings”. It wouldn’t hurt to point to a tutorial… |

My apologies, I meant questions about functionalities, not found in or understood from tutorials. |

Ah OK :) |
