Software testing help wanted for Raspberry Pi

Sunfish works now, although it seems to slow to nearly a stop when I transfer large files – but at least it’s working to some degree.
Could be a problem at my end though. My network is going through a powerline…

FTPc is another busted one.

Surely v. 1.48 is ARMv7 OK. It runs fine on the BeagleBoard with AEs on.

Penguin-Command works as stated before, but you have to remove DRenderer Module, and install the one from Packman.
OpenTTD fails, looks like a no sound issue

Probably with AE on FTPc does work, but having caveats of “you may need to use AE” isn’t good for a repo especially for pi software.
Adding the AE gui to the repo would be good too.

By sound fault, I mean there is no mixer yet on Pi so it crashes – it shouldn’t really crash, but hopefully there will be sound soon in the next image :-D

Tomorrow’s disc image should now have the VCHIQ softload, so if you combine that with a ROM from either today or yesterday then you should have fully working sound.

Should anyone want to install the softload without updating their entire disc image, it’s hidden away in !Boot.RO510Hook.Boot.PreDesk (!!VCHIQ obeyfile and VCHIQ folder). Just remember to copy it to !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk instead of the hook version!

RComp have FTPc 1.48 – am in discussions about its distribution status (not generally available AFAIK). I’ve blacklisted 1.44 for now to avoid confusion.

Sound issues – I’d be interested in feedback about this. You’ll probably want to make sure you have the latest DRenderer (0.55) from PackMan at least. There was mention of issues with DRenderer with PandaBoard and UnixLib programs – 0.56beta6 may fix these so it would be useful to know if we need to distribute that (would rather not since it’s marked as beta). Programs may need a recompile to use the new interface anyway (lots of breakages in their dependencies, so not a trivial job).

The signalbox application is much better now that you can hear the bells. Also MineHunt no longer crashes when it tries a sarcastic comment.

Mouse pointer (the miniature one!) still leaves a trail some of the time. With Maestro playing and the mouse sitting over one of the staves, the notes sometimes gets corrupted as they get written back after the screen has scrolled sideways.

I’ve just updated my Pi with the VCHIQ update and tried to test SampleEd but when I go to play a sample it just crashes. I use the DRenderer module underneath to handle the playback via the interface defined in the supplied header file. Does anyone know of any changes that I should be aware of? It seems to be working OK with version 0.55 on RISC OS 6. I know that it’s probably my code but I thought I’d ask before starting to dig into the problem. I have tried the 0.56beta8 version mentioned above.

UPDATE:

It works OK on RPCEmu with RISC OS 5.19 as well, but I have noticed a couple of odd things that I’m sure it didn’t used to do, so I think it’s safe to say I’ve got some digging to do.

Reporter doesn’t seem to be in the list!
Martin has told me that he gave ROOL via Chris Hall appropriate permission and that the permission extends suitably to allow usage in a commercial distribution!
It would be nice if it was in the disc image in an ‘installed’ state but with logging not enabled but easily enabled i.e. Can be easily enabled even booting fails very early on.

I see that very nice raspberry on a spoon backdrop only has licence for “Free for personal desktop usage only” :-( Does anyone have a suitably licensed image that can be used.
I understand that ROOL would like the disc Image to be suitable for distribution commercially by people such as ourselves (CJE Micro’s/4D)

Chris, I’ve passed that on to ROOL as I’m only handling things which can be easily installed post-distribution. Making a Reporter package is feasible, but it probably wants to be on the default distro rather than available later? A packaged Reporter shipped on the default distro would aid with later updates, but might not be feasible in the time (if only because it needs clearing with Martin).

This raspberry might suffice as an alternative image? CC-BY-2.0, requires attribution, commercial use allowed.

Theo: wow, thanks for the instructions on updating, that’s definately a BIG sloppy kiss for that! I forgot how cool Maestro was. Memories of when I was a little kid came rushing back!

Mplayer doesn’t work, needs a ton of memory too!
But if you could get DigitalCD on the package list that would be great, that works fine – listening to Photek at the moment. Sound seems to work very well so far.
I tried AMplay first but it doesn’t work :-(

DigitalCD says:

Binary distributions will from time to time be released to the public
by the Developers. These will be termed ‘Official Binary Distributions’
(OBDs).

No charge (other than media costs) may be made for a binary distribution and the binary distribution must always be distributed unchanged. Permission is automatically granted to ship OBDs of the Software on any media (floppies, CDs, internet site, computers, …), as long as the said media doesn’t contain any illegal, xenophobic or religious content.

That’s a fail on three fronts – it can’t go on the SD card as we can’t control what people will charge for distribution, we have no say whether an SD card will be hosted on a website with religious or other content, and I can’t package it because that requires moving files around (changing the distribution).

ThemeMan is cool, looks nicer than the default with the steel theme included
Couldn’t find anything about a licence on the website though, or in the software either.

You couldn’t ship it without asking, there is nothing say whether permission would or wouldn’t be given.

Seems like a fair protection, since some religions are highly xenophobic or bigoted, vetting them would seem sensible (especially for a media player).

This may not apply to Digital CD.
But I can see why people may think such restrictions a good idea and it may work if people are readily available to agree to extend the rights BUT history tells us that: contact can be lost / people lose interest / authors die…

just like I gave my permission to RComp for the ARMini, I give ROOL my permission to distribute DigitalCD, its related modules, documention and tools, be it for this disk image, the RPCEmu or whatever other product/medium you wishes to distribute it with.

You may distribute the packages either as on my website or pre-installed.

Is there a deadline for the disk image? I still have to release a new version of the DiskSample module so that it can read WAVE files where the ‘fmt’ tag is not the first header in the file (such file can be produced by RComp’s MusicMan).
Since I am also improving the support of some tracker formats in the TimPlayer module, I was planning to upload them both in a single release, and so if there is a deadline, I will try to make the release before that deadline.
