Updated Samba server?

This is all way outside my area of expertise. Can someone explain why an SMB server is preferable to an NFS server? |

I’ve yet to come across a NAS that doesn’t support SMB1! I’m sure they exist but not on the recent Synology, D-Link, Buffalo, ZyXEL we’ve tried |

Our NAS reports itself to the Mac and the PC as a Mac, but what that means I don’t know. The Pi can’t see it, any more than it can see the Mac or the PC. But Netsurf on the Pi talks DHCP with the router to access the internet very happily, and the Mac can now see Moonfish running on the Pi (Yay!) |

I’m so glad you included the word “yet” in that phrase. Of course the NAS on the other side of the wall here is set to do SMB2, because it seemed a better idea than SMB1
Probably means that it has AFP enabled (which is a somewhat legacy file share protocol concocted by Apple along with their rather naff AppleTalk protocol). You would probably see less traffic and more speed on your home network if that was off. If it’s anything like the Buffalo and Iomega NAS setups it will do you a perfectly good SMB2 share accessible by MAC and RO5 and the AFP can |

If I had the faintest idea how to do that I might have a go. Our son who set it up a few years ago tells me I have to work out how to do anything that needs doing…well, today I managed to access “advanced settings” on the Virgin Hub 3.0 in order to tell it not to change the Pi’s IP address, which wasn’t difficult but I was quite pleased with myself for doing it… Now I suppose I have to have a go at the NAS. Not sure how old the NAS is – it’s got two 3 terabyte drives arranged as a RAID, so it can’t be all that old! |

What I should have done earlier is this interesting wiki link
Of course if you quote the make and model:

I’ve just investigated the make and model this minute: it’s a Synology DS212. |

Nice. Not a cheapy, feature rich as they say. Think I have the right manual. Turning off AFP (Mac will do SMB and FTP anyway) is easy as one untick (page 40 of the manual) |

A Synology DS212 will be running a version of DSM – what version are you running? My DS213+ is running v6.2, and I can see it from my Iyonix, RPis, RPC using LanMan{98}, and various Android tablets and phones using ES File Explorer. The DS212 is a year or so older than mine … the model is DSnyy where n is the number of discs, and yy is the model year … but will work with the right options I am sure. |

Very thanks both – will see what I can manage. I just hope I don’t mess anything up – the rest of the family also access this beastie from various machines, but I think they’re all Apple apart from my old laptop (PC) and the Pi. |

Clive, If your DSM is old (v5 or even v4?) because it has never been updated, then before you do (or if you want help with LanMan) I suggest you email me and I can give you some help. See bottom of www.avisoft.f9.co.uk for an address. |

I’ve still got to find out what version it is running…I’ll ask son whether it’s ever been updated for a start! |

Can you connect to the web interface? If so, the version is probably bottom right in the initial sign-on screen. If you know the password (and I hope you do) you can sign on, then click on the main menu icon top left, then click on the Info icon. That will display full details of the box including DSM version. It might have been set to auto-update (which is not a good idea) – otherwise it will be some old version. |

Son says he’s been updating regularly. Haven’t yet gone in search of password, but will shortly. |
