David, these Elesar adverts/plugs are getting a bit blatent now – you don’t even say what your point is in posting this image? Browse has been on the ROOL downloads for years, and the recent update was just a build fix. Plus, you’d surely want to run Phoenix (which at least attemnpts some JS) rather than Browse…? /puzzled. |

Whoo! Look at me! I can use a quarter century old browser! Why don’t you give him a copy of WebsterXL to play with? ;-)
Maybe it’s one of the few sites simple enough to actually work on such an old browser? |

It came as a surprise to see Browse getting updates, I thought that ROOL had stopped further development, acknowledging how far behind the times it was. I have no idea why it has had these updates now and certainly can see no use for Browse, but it has had updates so it has to be beta tested, obviously. One of the updates was build fixes so it should be possible to build Browse now and it has to be built as there is no ready built download. ROOL’s test of goodness was that Resulting browser loaded ROOL homepage, which it didn’t here so I used another site. Results, the build builds & Browse browses (sometimes). |

I’m pretty sure that no binaries are available; you need to compile it yourself. I think I have a built copy of 2.16 somewhere (which should be functionally identical to 2.17) which I’m happy to share if anyone feels like having a play.
To be fair, Browse does attempt some JS; its JSLib is based on Netscape’s reference code and seems to be functional. With that said, I was only able to get it working standalone, not embedded in a page. |

The substantive purpose of these updates may be an updated PNG library in ImageLib with !Browse as a testbed. !Browse 2.17 is more successful as a PNG viewer than !Browse 2.07, as tested here. |

Browse has been on the ROOL downloads for years No-Where. If you’re desperate, here’s a
Most likely you’d not loaded AcornSSL, since ROOL redirect everything to the https equivalent. The ROOL site is a bit wonky without CSS as well. |

Funny. Thanks! |

That was it. Replying using Browse 2.17 and AcornSSL. |

Ah, those innocent halcyon days when browsers used to just render marked up content like they are supposed to, and it was understood that the end result was up to the browser and that HTML was not intended for layout purposes. Content was what was important. Then the Americans came along and broke it… |

I miss those innocent halcyon days, too. I don’t want layout. If my content has branching threads, that should be managed with hyperlinks to other pages, not layout. Oh, okay, if I can’t have a RISCOS style context-sensitive pop-up menu, I suppose a menu across the top or down the side is okay. And…and… oh damn, where are we going now? |

At least that mostly still works, depending who you get emails from. |

Last time used Browse was when I needed gopher, which was last year. |

Hmmm, you’ve not picked an old SJ Virus and started hankering after a moue with one button (for efficiency) have you. Seriously though, if Browse is small and simple and handles typical html files used for help etc it might be nicer than using NetSurf which is overkill for such simple stuff. |

Only in RISC OS land would you hear someone describe a 4 MB browser as “overkill” :) |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8170 posts |
Nah, you need to sit in my(our)1 office at work, even the young one’s (20’s) describe various software setups as “overkill” and that’s Windows kit. 1 It’s a four person office used in standard fashion with eight of us in there. Seniority counts so it’s my office. |

I’ve just successfully viewed Japanese Wikipedia with Browse :) |

!browse just earned itself a spot on my sdcard, because it can use the gopher url fetcher to look at gopher sites! gopher://sdf.org |
Chris Mahoney (1684) 2165 posts |
Gopher is one of those things I’ve never used but have wanted to try. Unfortunately I can’t get the Gopher module to build (Don’t know how to make 'o._ResData_.Gopher.Messages'). Are you able to share a prebuilt copy or point me in the right direction to build it myself? |
Sprow (202) 1158 posts |
Try |
Chris Mahoney (1684) 2165 posts |
Closer, but no luck, I’m afraid. The actual compile works now, but the link fails with: ARM Linker: (Error) Undefined symbol(s). I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to resource files etc! |

I could swear I pulled the binary out of rool’s gitlab but I can’t figure out how I did it, so…. |
David Pitt (3386) 1248 posts |
That is Gopher 0.16 (22 Sep 2007). It was on my Iyonix and does work now on the Titanium. The current version in git is 0.17 (04 Feb 2012). I have built that, with difficulty, it took nearly all day. |
