Larry Tesler (1945 – 2020) died on 16th February this year. Should I be surprised that a search of this forum did not reveal anything on the man? He was a computer scientist who worked for ARM, a board director of ARM, and, according to the Guardian obituary, “played a significant role in the commercial success of the ARM (Acorn Risc Machine) processor”. RISC OS folk should find it an interesting read |

The way the obituary is worded, it seems like he was instrumental in setting up ARM as a separate company. Essentially, Tesler identified the ARM chip as being ideal for the Apple Newton, and then ARM Ltd was set up to derisk the decision, to ensure Apple was not reliant on Acorn for the chip. It’s a take on the story which I have not heard before. |
