Latest version of TemplEd?

As the title says. I have v1.34 that came from DrWimp. Is there any later? |

That is the latest version I know of. The good thing is that it includes the sources so I could modify it a little to suit my needs (adding the 3D window flag, changing the behaviour of Minimise icon size, and a few other minor things IIRC). |

1.34 is the latest I know of as well. BTW, just how many template editors were there? DrWimp had WinEd as well as TemplEd, and the ROOL “Bonus binaries” download offers FormEd and WinEdit. It looks like you’re spoilt for choice… |

André – can you send me your source please? I am thinking of pasting in some support for the extra flags, no point in undoing your modifications!
Several. I think they came about in part because Acorn’s effort was so incredibly p*** poor. FormEd is… I just find it somewhere between unfriendly and infuriating (depending on my mood at the time).
A rough timeline – Acorn made FormEd. It sucked. So TemplEd was created. It rocked. Then along came WinEd, which according to the docu, was intended to be better than TemplEd “in every aspect”. I’m probably missing a half dozen that came and went in the Archimedes era. I dimly recall one that worked singletasking (and drew its windows on the screen itself). Probably aimed at Arthur or something. Never used it. |

Didn’t it create some quite, er, exciting template files at stages in its evolution, too? There do seem to be a lot of provisions around for file format brokenness, which is generally attributed to Acorn’s finest.
It was, IIRC. I know that I used TemplEd up until the point that WinEd was Open Sourced1, and then never went back. That said, WinEd has issues on modern hardware; I keep meaning to try to build a new version and see if that fixes some of the problems. I don’t really remember TemplEd.
That was commercial, wasn’t it? I recall an AU review which basically boiled down to “meh”, and never investigated further. What is WinEdit, though? Was that an Acorn thing? 1 I know, because I was probably one of the last people to register the Shareware version, by snail mail (which must date it to summer 1995). Tony Houghton wrote back saying thanks, but he was just about to release it as Open Source. He kept the money, though… |

Found Glazier on Stuttgart ftp (under Acornet). It’s a DeskLib/C program stuck in the 26 bit era. It loudly proclaims that it is a beta test with bugs, and it seems there was no later release as far as I can see. It also, sadly, was a convert to the Interface module, so a combination of that and a predeliction for everything being specified as oversized Homerton makes it really seriously fugly. Not something that couldn’t be fixed with some TLC to the templates, but why bother since there’s no source, thus it’ll only work under Aemulor and the bugs will remain. |

Ah, WinEdit too. So there’s, uh, what are we up to now? Six? [FormEd, TemplEd, WinEd, WindowEd, |

I take it the question is being asked because TemplEd has gone a bit crashy, or rather it just wont start for me any more on RO 5.27. Which is a shame as it is my favourite. |

No, it’s because there is no support for the extra flags; I wanted to check that there wasn’t any later version.
How does it not start up? What message/behaviour? It’s written in BASIC so ought to be fairly straightforward. However there are some support modules and I recall one of them gave problems with later revisions of ARMv7. If, on the other hand, it is specifically RISC OS 5.27 rather than the platform, it would be interesting to understand why it is failing – OS changes shouldn’t be causing stuff to blow up… ;-) My Pi is off at the moment – thunderstorm warning 1, and I never turned it back on after last night’s epic stroboscopic display 2. 1 http://vigilance.meteofrance.com/ 2 Not hyperbole, I remember school discos in the eighties that were less impressive than the show nature put on last night. |

I can entirely understand. Many years ago we were at my sister-in-law’s house near Toulouse. The sun had gone down, the sky was dark, it was so hot and humid that I didn’t know what to do with myself. But there was an average of 1 flash per second for quite a while. Despite it being so long ago, it still sticks in my mind. Nature can be very impressive. |

Thanks Rick, that change fixed it, and replacing MenuUtils 0.17 with 0.19 fixed it even better. I’ve now got my favourite template editor back! |

I thought I would tack this question on here as it concerns Templates files. I have been pursuing the translation of resources and I have got a reasonably quick, semi-automated method. This deals with Messages files OK. With Toolbox Res files you can export the text, translate it and re-import it, which is not very much trouble. Is there a Templates editor that can do something similar? Edit: In case anyone suggests it, CCres is not suitable for what I want. |
Steve Fryatt (216) 2105 posts |
Why not? Is it the fact that CCRes exports everything, whereas you just want the texts – which could be edited and imported back into any other template file of the same structure without changing any other aspect of the design? Just asking… :-) |

I think that’s an especially important bit – some texts won’t be indirected in UK Templates but will need to be so in other languages, so CCRes is what’s needed, so you can flag translations that need to modify other bits. |

My heating control app has an Overview window that consists of a matrix of rows and columns. Each row represents a room. The window is entirely generated by code (BASIC), in contrast to all other windows, which are defined by templates. The writable icons all allocate space from one DIM’d block. |

Wrong thread, Dave? |
Steve Drain (222) 1620 posts |
More or less. You can certainly identify the text strings in the file from CCRes, and if you were a linguist you could translate them and the get CCRes to reconstruct the Templates file. However, I use Google Translate on all text at one go, not on individual icons in multiple files. ;-)
Yes, I had identfied that problem. A suitable editor acting like ResEd would accommodate that. |

I have not looked at the application, so don’t know what it does, how it works, or even if it’s still usable on modern systems, but I came across a mention of TempTed and wondered if it was anything like what you were after? |
Steve Drain (222) 1620 posts |
Thanks for that. It looks just what I was after, but regrettably it is not 32-bit compatible. ;-( I have started to sketch out how I would do just the export and import, unless you are looking to add this to WinEd. ;-) |

I came across a mention of TempTed TempTEd 2.9, at the top of the page, is 32bit and is running on the Titantium |
Steve Drain (222) 1620 posts |
Oops! Silly me. I went straight to the bottom, so downloaded the earlier versiion, as you suspect. I have it running now and it seems to satisfy all my desires. ;-) |
