Portable RISC OS hardware - Jornada

I’m always careful about people who spot random ARM hardware and suggest “let’s port RISC OS to it” – indeed, I wrote an article about that a little while ago – I won’t bore you with the details, and let’s not get into the “I’d buy it if it was done” responses. However, the Jornada is a long-established platform, has a Linux port (which means the hardware is reasonably well understood), and a real keyboard, meaning you wouldn’t have to rely on touch screen only. Plus the price is right on readily available second hand hardware: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=JORNADA728-R&cpc=SCH (That’s a US link of course) The screen’s just about a big enough to be useful for RISC OS, and there’s readily accessible external storage, which simplifies various development issues. I’m not sure that there’s a developer who has the right embedded experience and is available and keen to do this, but it’s rather more doable than various other platforms. No, I’m not going to do it ;-) |
