Pinboard icon text backround

Hello, On RISC OS 4.x/Six (and I think on RO 3.8 too), the text captions for Pinboard icons have a transparent background (i.e. the edge of letter blends in with the surrounding background image, like what the Filer does), however this is not the case for RISC OS 5.x where the text requires a background colour. I was curious to know if this was a feature that ware removed, or was it a ROL addition to their branch? Any answers to this would be appreciated :D Cheers, Dan |

The theme setup (double click on !Boot, then on Themes) should create the file !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk.ThemeSetup which sets up the theme, part of which is:
(and maybe some other stuff) It’s that which removes the icon backgrounds. |

Thanks for the reply Rick. I had a look into WimpVisualFlags, and adding the flag -NoIconBoxesInTransWindows to WimpVisualFlags in !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk.ThemeSetup did the job:
I’d imagine its probably worthwhile putting a feature request for inclusion as an option for Visual Theme or Pinboard Configuration plugins? Cheers, Dan |

Shouldn’t that be set up in an Obey file named CoFlags In PlingBoot.Resources.!ThemeDefs.Themes.Sovereign or whichever theme you wish to effect? Otherwise the effect would be lost when changing theme, no? |

I read this query last night and the memory filtered through:- It’s a Configure feature of the Select version that the late Paul Vigay ( 1964-2009 ) thought should be in RO5 so he created MiscSetup to give an additional Configure plugin for “no icon boxes on pinboard” as well as no boxes in windows and different texture background in menus than elsewhere there are an assortment of options (some of which may now be in the default) Anyway, a fairly old fix for a missing feature. |

It was a set of “miscellaneous options” that Paul thought were missing from RISC OS 5; there’s no Select plugin of that name, and it can be useful on those versions of the OS too.
As a previous poster has already pointed out, it’s a theme choice, so the way to change it is to change to a theme with the option set as you like it. Some themes might want rub-out boxes on Pinboard icons, whilst some might not. Adding an option in Configure will just confuse this. |

It is handled by the Themes setup, if there’s a “CoFlags” file that includes it (only the Raspberry theme has the file, and it doesn’t include it). It really ought to be an option in the setup window (like “Menus have backgrounds” is).
Hmm, it assumes Next is 640K. |

I was going on the text Paul provided, quoting it as a Select feature.
I’m with Rick on this one.
Ah the feature to adjust the Next. I did say “as well as … an assortment of options” |

So was I… :) “Another little Christmas present for people. This time for RISC OS 5/Iyonix owners (although it should work on pre-RISC OS 5 if you install by hand),” said Paul, in his post to csa.misc on Boxing Day 20031, announcing version 1.00. 1 Yes, I do have a record of most software release announcements from the past 15 years. It proved invaluable when finding things to write about in Archive’s PD Column, and these days allows me to fill spaces in The WROCC. |

I went looking on the web site for the item then read the !Help file (I do that sometimes) which was where I saw:
So Paul seemed convinced the easy Configure option existed in Select. As I said, I don’t have Select so what’s in it’s Configure is a total unknown for me. |
