RPi Net App Wobblies

Having just put ROS on a Raspberry Pi for the first time, I’ve been running through stuff on the HDD (copied across from my BB -xM) to see what has issues. The two here aren’t ones I use (especially with Arcade’s demise) but in case anyone else might want to know or test…

Works fine on the BB -xM. On the RPi it locks the machine when selecting a server – the router or Arcade (I know but it still shouldn’t freeze). Alt/Break releases.

WeJames 0.24
Seems fine on the BB -xM though not having a web site I’ve only tried loading it. On the RPi it locks the machine on startup. Alt/Break releases.

And your software is old. On my Pi2, Nettle v0.2043b works and WebJames 0.48 (non php) as well.

As it’s a Pi 4, with an ARMv8, I’m guessing maybe your older software contains SWP or something? This problem was resolved a while ago (when the Pi3 was introduced).

It’s worth adding that different generations of processor can behave quite differently. The xM is an early ARMv7 core so it is pretty permissive in what it will run.
The Pi2 (first release) is a later ARMv7 core so it faults a lot of bogus rubbish that the xM had no issue with.
The ARMv8 tightens the screws a little further.

Running Linux or somesuch, everything is available as source and can be built for a machine. Here in the world of RISC OS, one can still find software that only works if alignment exceptions are disabled, never mind stuff like ARMv7/ARMv8… It probably doesn’t help that as projects get passed around, different versions with different tweaks turn up in all sorts of places. I can point to two WebJames sites, and I had trouble with Samba working out which of the three (four?) was actually supposed to work on newer machines….

Again, it’s been mentioned that maybe somewhere around these parts it might be useful to have a page pointing at the latest versions of things and notes about what they do or do not work on.

Maybe if someone put a link on the Documentation homepage that took you to a page called Software compatibility list

Of course then people would need to do updates when newer boards appeared and unlisted applications were noted/checked/tested.

I don’t actually have a use for it. At some point I must have played with it so it was there. I’ll go hunt for Nettle.
