Flicking through some old manuals on Chris’s Acorns, I found the SWI OS_ReadArgs appears to be derived from the BCPL function rdargs.

See page 8 of the FORTRAN 77 manual, and page 62 of this BCPL manual.

A lot of us were proficient with BCPL and thought we needed something comparable as a standard OS service. Too many homebrew parsers!
