Impression at South West show

The South West show was interesting. On one stand I saw Impression running on a Pandaboard ES with the support of Aemulor but on closer inspection it was not quite what I had expected:

Yes, it is being actively developed and converted to 32 bit. About 10% of the 32 bit conversion and updating work has been done (hence the need for Aemulor at present).

For everybody else yes that is Impression running. However there is still a great deal of work to do so it isn’t recommended that you hold your breath!

As we had so many RISC OS computers (two proper PandaBoard ES based ones, a BeagleBoard xM and one of those slow Raspberry Pi things ;-) ) on my stand, space was a premium. OK these days the computers are much smaller but a 30" monitor, a 28" monitor and a projector mean that the only space that was left for the essentials was on top of my machine…

As an owner of both Impression and Ovation Pro (using OvPro more than Impression at any time in the last decade) I’m just impressed that it exists.
RO needs the duality of OvP AND Impression.

No doubt by the time it’s ready to use the platform will be using some even newer hardware.

Bearing in mind how long ago X-ample got the Impression sources out of Kate (it’s at least a decade) I wouldn’t necessarily holding your breath, or any longer-cycle excretory function. And I bet it will still fall over if you try to put more than 256 frames on a page.

Mind you, having looked at detail at the code produced, I can only imagine how difficult the sources will be to deal with. They really had no idea about ADR for example. Dear oh dear. It was very early days.

Come along to ROUGOL on Monday 18th March for all the latest info on Impression X from the developer Richard Keefe.

Richard will be talking about how he became involved, what progress has been made, what still needs to be done, and how much of the source code is missing!

If there’s source code missing, he could take a chance and ask Xara if they have anything lying around. Maybe he’s already done that.

The likely hood that the sources have been found in the last ten years must be…. have you an electron microscope?

I corresponded with people from Xara fairly recently about something else. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that sources could be found, however unlikely it may seem.

Does anyone have an update from the ROUGOL meeting about Impression-X?
