I want to display Japanese in the browser, but what should I do? What browser should I use? |

NetSurf can display Japanese if you have fonts installed. I converted IPAex a while ago, but it should work with any Japanese fonts. |

Sorry, I’m new to this RISC OS and I’m still confused, after downloading I don’t know how to install fonts. |

The fonts should then be available in NetSurf (and other apps). |

Firstly, Chris’ tips above are excellent – thanks Chris! For reference, I have experimented with non-Latin fonts in Iris. To do this, you’ll need to find suitable ttf/otf fonts and put them in Iris.Resources.UnixFont.Fonts (if memory serves) or Boot.Resources.UnixFont.Fonts However, I’m not sure it was quite that simple – certainly I was able to accurately browse japanese videogame websites, but I cannot recall if I had to tell Iris anything more. I think I tried the “infamous” unifont typeface which is known to have a huge range of unicode glyphs, but looks rather, erm, crude. You can find files here https://unifoundry.com/unifont/ Mostly I was interested in seeing all the wikipedia side links appear with correct glyphs, and click them to see pages shown in chinese or japanese etc. I found that enabling this was practical, but had a significant impact on performance due to the size of these fonts, and the number of glyphs contained within. At the time I put this on hold because of that – on my test machine it added nearly 30 seconds to the load/render time of wikipedia. This was at least a year ago, though, maybe 18 months. Hope this is of some help to anyone who stumbles across this thread :) |
