Is riscos.info repository acting up?
Paolo Fabio Zaino (28) 1882 posts |
Hi, This is on a fresh RISC OS installation, so nothing cached yet, so, if you check on yours you may not necessarly see the problem, JFYI. Autobuilt manifest appears empty: I have noticed this yesterday trying to install GCC on my new RISC OS system. |

The front page has been giving “503 Service unavailable” or “Too many connections (localhost)” for several days. A handful of static pages can still be reached – for example the RPCEmu mailing list archive is available – but in general the site is very poorly at the moment. |

Ok, thanks Stuart! Been away for work for a while and just started to get back on RISC OS stuff over the weekend, so I had no idea it was going on by a while. Hopefully it’ll be sorted soon. Cheers. |

Hello, I’m glad I saw this. I’ve just started using RiscOS last week and wasn’t having any luck getting GCC and related packages installed, but was afraid I was just a dunce. Thanks. |

Hello, and welcome Clay. No, not the best start for you I guess, it’s the first time I’ve encountered a problem accessing the packages. Hopefully, it’ll be back to normal soon. |

In the meantime, Clay, if you haven’t already done so, you can download RISC OS Direct over at the RISC OS Developments website. That includes a load of development tools including GCC all ready to go. Obviously downloading them “properly” would be even better, but in the meantime, it should allow you to explore developing with GCC on RISC OS. It should be fully compatible with any ROMs/software you download here, as it is just a more extensive edition of RISC OS, with more pre-prepared/installed software. Enjoy RISC OS! |

Thank you both for the welcome. I will download RISC OS Direct soon and give it a try. Has there been any news on what happened to the riscos.info site? Also, as a new user, where is the best place to ask beginner questions when I can’t find an existing solution? Thanks again! |
Andrew McCarthy (3688) 605 posts |
You’re welcome. The best place to ask beginner questions- I’d stick my questions in the Community Support section here. There’s also a friendly GCC email support group here and a couple of handcrafted beginner playlists- ROD and ROOL Here’s a handy forum guide. Have fun! |

Hi Clay, as a new user, if you fancy a complimentary issue of Archive, the magazine for RISC OS users, I’ll pop one in the post to you. It has a range of articles, hints and tips, and other items that may help you along. Send me your address to gavin@archivemag.co.uk if you’re interested. |

Is it still Theo Markettos who looks after riscos.info? I might send a quick e-mail to see what’s up. |
Clay Parker (10123) 4 posts |
Thanks to all! And, Gavin, I’ll take you up on that offer. I’ll send you an email shortly. |

It’s back. |

Thanks, Rob.
True, the site is up, and probably being gradually restored. No pre-built riscos.info packages are in Packman just yet, as the auto-built manifest is still empty. |
Andrew McCarthy (3688) 605 posts |
The Package manifests have materialised, and I did a quick test, the GCC packages are now available again from !PackMan. Thank you! Theo? :) |

I’ve finally got back to setting up my system, now that it’s the weekend. So far everything is working great. I’ll keep my fingers crossed! I really appreciate all the assistance. |

My Packman refused to upgrade OmniClient and a few other applications saying “missing cache file for package OmniClient (2.33)”. Version 2.33 is the current version whereas mine is 2.32. |

Which repository sources have you enabled? |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8170 posts |
It’s probably important that the general users know what to enable/disable. The lack of repository access1 can be a showstopper in many cases. 1 A recent event I worked at had no program, just a beer list via an app. |
Paolo Fabio Zaino (28) 1882 posts |
Indeed. In this case sounds like an issue with the ROOL repository, or some apps that have a specific dependecy to that repo, but I could be wrong… |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8170 posts |
Perhaps Packman should indicate which repositories it is using and which are responding? |
Paolo Fabio Zaino (28) 1882 posts |
This is a question for Alan :) |

A more off-the-cuff idea that may or may not be viable. |
David R. Lane (77) 766 posts |
Packman is working again now, not that I have done anything. It looks as if it was a repository problem. |
Paolo Fabio Zaino (28) 1882 posts |
Yup, often is just a repository issue. |
