RISC OS on the Ubuntu Edge?

Will Canonical Ltd be choosing an ARM (multiple) Processor(s) for their proposed Ubuntu Edge smartphone? I haven’t been able to find a definite answer to this, but suspect the answer is ‘yes’ from various information I have found on the web. |

It is an insane amount of money to ask for a production run of 40,000 with, apparently, no plans for further ones. I also find it worrying that they are promoting this epic spec but still can’t say what processor they plan to use. Likely an ARM, but not necessarily. |

They seem to be hoping it’ll be the first such “superphone” with a usable desktop OS, and that mainstream models (by others) will follow if there’s demand. |

I’m a bit concerned by battery life. Having a multi-GHz multicore CPU for desktop use, and turning almost all of it off to use as a phone is quite a hard thing to do, especially with third-party apps. It remains to be seen whether Ubuntu Phone is more efficient at stopping unnecessary background activity than Android is. I quite like the alternative to everything-in-the-cloud, though. |
