Adding Clipboard module to ROM builds

A thread on csa.progammer prompted me to check if the Clipboard module was included in the latest ROM builds, it isn’t.

Presumably, being a new module, it’s not in the list of components to build yet.

If that’s the case, could it be added please.

I think on balance it’s generally not a good idea.

• Since the module can be used on most versions of the OS (3.1 onwards? I’m not sure offhand) and even including the ROL versions, any applications that use it will at least have to fall back to loading it from disc.

• ROM images for Iyonix and IOMD builds are already quite full, and the modules that are in them will naturally tend to bloat out over time as new features are added. Clipboard is neither required for booting the machine, nor something that you can’t do without if you shift-boot the machine, so I don’t think it counts as being a critical ROM module.

The size limitation is nothing like as strict on Beagleboard so it may make sense to add it there at some point, but that build isn’t really mature yet. In fact there are advantages to sticking things in ROM on Beagleboard because the build system knows it can take advantage of new CPU features when building ROMs that isn’t true of disc components in general.

I do think it would make sense for Clipboard to become a standard feature of !System, so as soon as we get a boot sequence build up and running again, remind us to add it.
