File storage options...

Hi all, I use my RISC OS Pi system as a joint-main machine (lots of word processing, email, browsing, accounts, diary etc – thank you RISC OS Open for helping RISC OS live on..). I’m wanting to expand this to include music playing after ripping my various CDs. My concern is that handling lots of larger files via the SD card might make things unpleasantly slow, compared to traditional hard disk speeds. Are there options to A) speed up file access to storage devices and B) expand storage options. I’ve googled briefly external USB hard drives but their support seems iffy on the RPi so probably v iffy via RISC OS. Perhaps another option would be via ethernet to a networked file server? Hmm…that’s my other criteria – has to be fairly cheap/free! Cheers, Stevyn |

I’m typing this on NetSurf While playing a MP3 album on DigitalCD – no problems here! Depends what you want to do alongside playing music, I guess… |

Hi Stevyn, If you take a look at this it may help you make up your mind. It should apply for a Pi I think, but to cut a long story short… |
