Acorn Replay

We had the Eidos codecs (and the whole Escape video editor) running on RISC OS Java with impressive performance. I’m unaware of any codecs existing natively for RISC OS – at the time, Stephen Streater considered the future as Java. |

Wow! Piers, I always wondered how well the RISC OS Java implementation worked – pretty well it seems in this instance ! |

and then looking at those Eidos archived Escape video editor pages and feel such a missed opportunity for back porting etc… but no point worrying about missed opportunities… this is RISC OS now and what it can do lately is pretty amazing for a hobby status OS. |

It worked quite well. We had Word Perfect running, too. Shame both projects disappeared. |

Which WordPerfect? The full screen one (5.1) that was the reference word processor for DOS (excepting those who will die on the hill marked WordStar), or the lacklustre Windows remake that all but ended the firm’s dominance? |

The player readme means NT or W95/98. |

WordPerfect for Java. It never got a full release, but Acorn (presumably via Oracle) got given a preview to test with. |

Oh, that Wordstar – file format was fairly simple, so knocking up a converter for Olivetti word processor to WS6 only took an evening (then two more converting it to GW BASIC) |

I think it would have been Sun Java at the time, Oracle didn’t buy Sun until 2010. |

Yes – but Oracle were heavily touting Java as the solution for a heterogeneous NC environment and presumably ISVs were trying to get their software, such as WP, into the NC ecosystem and were pushing it to Oracle to get NC vendors to test it. |

Of course it was Sun Java – I didn’t say otherwise. I said Oracle (presumably) gave Acorn the preview of WordPerfect. Sun had probably never heard of Acorn in 1997. |

Acorn licenced various technologies from Sun for Risc iX if I recall correctly |

Hey Raik – success ! I managed to create a replay file from Cineworks (imported some existing test replay files). doubled clicked on the MPEG and it would not play …. but…. This was on a RPI4b 4GB with RO5.31H. I then copied the MPEGs to my PC and played the files on VLC. Did not test sound and but that may be the next experiment – happy with video at the moment. Mmm.. might have to rebuild that RPC with 586 PC card and Windows 95 (maybe go for 98) so can fire up that old version of Microstation Mmm.. might have to rebuild that RPC with 586 PC card and Windows 95 (maybe go for 98) so can fire up that old version of Microstation |

no sure why last 4 lines repeat – have tried to edit it but when editing it only shows it once |

I have play around with Cineworks but Replay is not my main interest. |

mmm… is VideoED in a shareable state? Do you intend to release it or is it for your own use? |

A bit of all ;-) |
