Iconset/Theme Thread

This is a general thread were people can post their Iconset or Theme for Risc OS users.
The rules for people uploading thread:
Preview Image of the iconset or theme
Last update date
Download link
Update your post instead of creating multiple ones, this makes it easier for people to find your theme or iconset.
Include Readme’s for people who don’t know how to install a new theme, changelogs are optional.

For those people who want to say what they like or don’t like of a particular theme or iconset, please include what theme you are talking about so that people know’s what theme you are talking about.

Apple Theme (removed due to potential copyright issues)

This was the results of me learning to create themes for Risc OS, Primarily aimed at people who wants a dedicated theme for their Macs running RPCemu.

For people who likes the 4.39 iconset but uses 5.2x, comes complete with icons and wallpapers.

A very small collection of my stolen or borrowed icons (Linux, a9home) you can see here .
Not sure if I should give out. However, it is still a long way to a complete Dreamlinux based theme.
My Pandora Desktop looks like a mongrel at this time.

If those icons for the Apple theme came from OS X, I’d probably not distribute it, as I assume they are copyright material. I don’t suppose Apple will especially care, but still, I’d probably not.

The Dreamlinux Theme is “…made available below to be used by other
distros and users.” Also not a problem.
For the German a9home-Theme I can take a question to the maintainer.

At Apple, you never know. May be they not interested, in can also be just as they overreact. But I think “redrawing” is not forbidden ;-)

I like those Dreamlinux icons Raik. Would love to see a complete set of Icons and Toolsprites.

As I wrote in another thread: “So far my own pleasure …”.
Some Toolsprites are finished, others are still missing.
I work continuously but very slow about it. It will take a long time until this is done.

Well if you need any help Raik just ask and I’ll see what I can do…

Search for “AppleII” in the forum. The reply is a long post, the pertinent part is about half way.

Apple are very protective of their copyright and ideas, even the ones that existed prior to patents being granted…

This sounds a great idea, it’d certainly be nice to be able to include some more themes as part of the default disc image or as a separate download if they become too numerous or bloaty. At the moment there’s only really full sets for RISC OS 3 (“Morris4”), RISC OS 4 (“Ursula”), and cross breeding from Richard Hallas’ Iyonix style icons with differing window furniture.

That implies a few extra requirements for completeness:

• Remembering to check for any copyright issues, for example the SD card logo requires a licence fee for its use so best to avoid that and similar trademark reuse
• To pick a licence for the redistribution of your theme, preferred is probably a BSD-a-like licence in case the designs get included on something that gets sold like a USB stick, but at least pick one
• The theme name should be allocated (otherwise attempting to merge two themes together is likely to end in tears)
• That the icon set is a complete one

And a few notes on what a theme entails:

• Look in !ThemeDefs to get an idea of what you need from one of the other themes – Ursula and Morris4 both have around 175 icons to cover the ROM apps and common filetypes
• Optionally design some tool sprites
• Look at the disc based components in the HardDisc4 download, these are themed too where appropriate (for example, !HForm uses an icon like the hard disc, whereas !Patience is generic to all themes)
• The theme selector plugin will try to render a preview of the theme as described in Preview support and any WimpVisualFlags can be predefined in a CoFlags file
• Most common is 90×90 dpi, but 90×45 and 180×180 are worth producing too if the master designs are kept at the highest resolution the others can often be mechanically generated

It’s a labour of love to produce a full set, say 2h each, that’s 47 days just drawing the icons!

I will collect (Pandora, Panda, Beagle) the icons and make a download. But it takes a while.
You can send a mail via the contactform of my Pandorapage if you want.

I have pick up my Sprites / Icons from all my Hardware incl. RPCEmu (every hardware has its time). In the next days I must check and sort out (my pleasure is not yours).
I found a “forgotten” unready Linux-based non colored iconset . I try “quick and dirty” on my Pandora. The Sprites you can find here (unsorted and unready). If anybody makes a theme from it, please “free for all”. (I can’t control. )

A4com has allowed me to use free and give out the A9home-theme. I have changed it so that it should work with the thememanager.
Also I change the “Classic RISC OS” sprites from there . Nobody to ask. You can download the changes themes for the theme manager from here .

The Themes are not working with RC12 (unstable with crash)!!! Not sure what the reason is. I will change / fix it the next few days.
Working fine with RC11, my Pandora, Panda and xM.

Probably a combination of a late Easter holiday and a May bank holiday, plus the wives needing spring cleaning/alterations¹ keeping people out of circulation.

I suspect that lots of people are interested in themes but that once they have set one up to their own satisfaction they very rarely change it. This is certainly the case for myself.
Making a theme is a lot of work. Anybody who can produce tools to minimize that work is doing the community a favour. When it comes to filetype icons, however, there is the question of who owns them. I mean this an informal sense. Ultimately it is the user of the computer, but she may be wise enough to leave well alone when it comes to filetypes devised by others. But whoever devizes them, they need to know about general themes before they can design to them.
