SparkFS compression methods comparison

So I got bored, I guess? And made a spreadsheet comparing the compression of all the different methods in SparkFS – and how quick they are.

Results

Some notes:

• Tests were done on a Raspberry Pi at default clock speed by compressing the “Utilities” directory. The absolute speed (which is in bytes/sec) is not particularly useful, but the relative comparison is.
• Zip Deflate gets by far the best compression, but is also the slowest by far.
• Squash gets (marginally) better compression than the default Compress 12, but is significantly slower.
• “No compression” is (perhaps unsurprisingly) the fastest.
• The best “traditional” Spark method is Compress 16.
