accessing FAT16/32 formatted HD

hi guys
i have a RiscPC/600 with ROM v4.02 soft loaded to v4.39, if i remove the CDROM (which is ATA/SLAVE) and i mount an hard drive (ATA/SLAVE), RISCOS says “i can’t understand this drive, is it formatted ?”

the hard drive i am talking about is 8 GByte of size, i have used fdisk (linux) to partition it into a 1 slice, so it’s

/dev/sda
/dev/sda1 FAT32 (type 0×0b)

then i have mkfs.vat /dev/sda1

but RISCOS is not able to see it

what’s wrong ? what is missing ?

the same happens if i attach a 2Gbyte hard drive partitioned and formatted the same way

RISC OS doesn’t have partition support.
Certain third party drive interfaces (probably no longer available unless CJE has something) did their own style of partitioning.

Partition support is in the bounty list to be done.

gosh, so there is no way to attach a FAT32 hard drive =(
my purpose is to add a removable sled with an IDE disc on, FAT32 formatted, to share things with linux/windows machine as through the lan is a bit too slow

what happens if i put a iomegaZip/SCSI on the Cumana SCSI podule ? Ummmm, i am not sure i have to partition it before making a FAT32 filesystem.

may work ?

And if you use a second HD… Master/Slave?
Not sure how cumana handle Partition.
PowerIDE can handle more then one Filecore partition. I use it with my A4, one 2GB HD with 4×512MB.
DosFS on 4.39 can handle Floppys in FAT16 but nativ HDs, not sure. Maybe Win95FS can. I have not try. FAT32FS works only with the Castle USBPodule, I mean.
Iomega ZIP was working for a long time with my Powertec and my SCSIConnect. FAT or Filecore, no problem.

I don’t think it’s lack of partition support. You don’t have FAT discs with less than one partition – which is all the OP has.

i have 2 hard drives on the pATA chain

1) pATA/MASTER → RiscOS bootstrap disk with RiscOS Applications
2) pATA/SLAVE → it works good if formatted for RiscOS, it does not work at all if formatted FAT16/FAT32

i have one partition !

/dev/sda is the whole disk
/dev/sda1 is the first partition in PC partition scheme, and it’s the only partition i have created

I think you should try Fat32fs. This gets round the DOSFS size limits, extending them by a large degree!

also i have found a NFS client

but they are all commercial applications, a bit expensive, ~ 40-50UKP, i am a bit surprised that an OS like RiscOS has not these applications already included.

Well you can try the free versions Sunfish client and Moonfish being a NFS server for RISC OS available from Alex Waugh which I used and they work well. Google is your friend for the actual website.

is it good working with RiscOS v4.39 ?

Fat32FS and 4.39 was only working with my Castle USB Podule. But I never try with a real internal FAT-HD.
Maybe you can mount it with somthing like this: fat32fs:mount -fp1 :[drivenumber] { > null: }. [drivenumber] is not trivial.
E.g. 16 is the Pandora left SD-slot (fp1 = first partition), 17 the right one. No other drives aviable.

is it possible to create an HD image that appears to be ADFS-format when installed in a RiscPC but DOS-format when installed in a PC ?

also, it seems NetBDS has support
