LAN options for the BeagleBoard?

Hi all. Now that my BeagleBoard network is up and running, and so is NetSurf (it used to crash after loading a page, a while ago, but now it works fine…), I thought I’d try to get access to my Windows shared folders. As an aside, has anyone got Firefox to work on the BeagleBoard, and if so, could you provide a link? As I understand, there’s basically two options for networking with non-RISC OS computers: OmniClient and LanMan98. I downloaded OmniClient from the downloads page, and it seems to work ok if alignment exceptions are turned off, but no matter what I enter in the “Mount ‘LAN Manager’ server” dialogue box (Name, Server name, etc.), I only get the very unhelpful “Bad parameters” error message. This used to work on my Iyonix, and maybe I’m entering data in the wrong format, so if anyone has got OmniClient to work successfully on the BeagleBoard, could you perhaps provide me with sample input for this dialogue box? Also, has anyone used LanMan98, or any other option to successfully network with a non-RISC OS computer? Regards, Terje |

LanMan98 should work OK . There was some discussion last month too. Myself, I’ve not tried either. |

No idea about if the two you mention work (yet), but there is another RISC OS option – NFS with sunfish: http://www.drobe.co.uk/features/artifact1172.html (you also need to configure the windows firewall) |

This is most often caused by an unset Inet$ variable. Do *SHOW Inet*and see if there are any obvious ones empty, in particular those relating to the interface you’re trying to connect via. |

I can confirm that the most recent version of LanMan98v2 works very well on the BeagleBoard. It was released only a few weeks ago. Note that it is only this latest version that works on the BB; previous versions fail. ShareFS works, though with some nuisances; in particular, transmitting a file from an Iyonix to a BB will often incur very long delays while a red hourglass counts down. The other direction seems to work fine. The latest versions of Sunfish and Moonfish are pretty successful too, though with some niggles that you may have to work round. Alex Waugh may still be working on them, and is receptive to feedback. |

Thanks a lot for your feedback. If I don’t get OmniClient to work, I’ll probably opt for LanMan98. One advantage of the former is that it’s free… I’ll also check out the Sunfish/Moonfish options. I guess ShareFS would only work between two RISC OS computers (although possibly also with an emulator). Regards, Terje |
