Beagleboard XM - no video out

Perhaps this thread should be renamed ‘Beagleboard XM - no going out (all weekend)’ |

If anyone needs it, a ROM with HDD4 as the default. Built with the CVS latest changes. Working on my Xm ;) |

Hmm, after some playing about I still have no output from the BB. The supplied Micro-SD card boots happily to the test screen, but writing an SD card with the relevant bits using !SDCreate doesn’t then start up at all. My monitor reports ‘No input signal’, and I get no display, no keyboard lights or beep on startup. I don’t currently have a USB-Serial cable to look at debug. Any suggestions what I’m doing wrong? I get Power & USB hub LEDs lit. |

Do you have a way of checking the card write has worked as expected? So far, I’ve only used SDCreate to create the image but not to write it (SD card reader issues)... so then I write the image file to the card using a Windows laptop. When re-writing the latest image, I found I had to reformat the card first, in order for the imaging prog to work. |

I tried writing to the card with !SDCreate on the Iyonix, and creating the image and writing this on the PC using WIN32discimager from the BB site, both of which had the same effect, ie. no output. I suspect it is a problem with writing the image, but I’m not sure how to go about fixing this. |

Be aware that there is a delay from powering up the xM until you reach a supervisor prompt – it isn’t instant like you might expect. I’ve not timed it, but it seems like it could be around a minute. I don’t know why it takes so long. If you are using the debug on the serial port you can see a lot of activity before it even reaches the point where it loads and runs the RISC OS ROM. |

Yes, I found that with the validation image, but I left the BB running for a good 20mins and still no output :-( |

Ok, I’ve successfully written the verification image to the SD card and that boots ok, so it’s maybe a problem with the RISC OS image I’m generating. I copied the u-boot.bin and MLO files off the SD card which came with the xM, dragged those and the ROM linked earlier in this thread to SDCreate, saved the file out and written that image to the SD card using the same Windows software which has worked for the verification image. I’m clearly doing something wrong, but what? |

Or not :-(
Have you also tried the 2010-08-20 versions of MLO and u-boot listed here instead of those on the shipped card? (I don’t know whether or not it’s possible that different versions shipped with newer boards might not work with RISC OS.) Have you tried the ROOL 2010-11-01 Beagle ROM ? – although Tank’s ROM is clearly working for him, so it seems highly unlikely that it wouldn’t work elsewhere. |

Yay, that fixed it, thanks! It seems that the u-boot.bin and/or MLO files as supplied with my xM are to blame! I’ve now got it booted to a supervisor prompt. Need to work on getting it booting off the USB drive to go straight to a desktop now! |

Grrr! Now is not the time for my nice USB HDD to die on me :-( |

I use the following commands at the supervisor prompt to set up and boot (bearing in mind there’s no CMOS RAM settings at present): - configure lmtransport ip configure filesystem scsi configure scsifsdrive 4 drive 4 !boot Put a copy of !NetTime in your boot sequence to set the clock and configure it through the !Internet User file (notes about how/where elsewhere in the forum). |

The ROM in my link above sets the default filesystem as SCSI and drive as 4. This then boots straight to the desktop if you have an external USB HDD with the default HD4 copied to it. I have been using the same drive for my DevKit as well. My supplied SD card was unreadable, so I had to download the MLO and U-Boot.BIN files anyway. |

Interesting – I guess that’s something I’ll have to look into when my board arrives. |

My xM board just arrived. Wont be getting to play with it until i finish off the DM9000 NIC. Looks shiny though. S |

I’ve just noticed that the xM-A3 SRM is on the beagleboard.org site – although maybe it’s been there a while already. |

Having replaced the HDD inside the enclosure, my Iyonix still hangs when trying to format it, so I’m thinking maybe the enclosure’s faulty instead (sometimes when I plug it in the Iyo doesn’t recognise it, and I have to unplug and replug). New enclosure now ordered, so I’ll try again! |

changing the desktop background did hang the machine.OK, I’ll remember to take a look at that. I haven’t been able to reproduce this – can you give some more detailed reproduction steps? It seems that the u-boot.bin and/or MLO files as supplied with my xM are to blame!Interesting – I guess that’s something I’ll have to look into when my board arrives. I can’t reproduce that either – the files that came with my xM work fine! Can you upload them somewhere or mail them to me so I can try with your files? (I’d expect the files to be identical to mine, but it’s always worth checking!) |

Here is a ROM with HDD4 as the default. Built with the CVS latest changes. Also a SDImage built with the above ROM for the xM |

Worked perfectly with my 1.8” USB disk that I had already set up as HD4. Even boots fine from HardDisk4 with SCSI::HardDisk1 inserted (containing the now obsolete boot file). Nice job! Is this an “inofficial” ROM release or will future ones use HD4 as well? |
