There’s quite a bit in the Internet Archive if you dig a bit.
The Wayback Machine will pull up copies of “mostly” complete old web pages and it offers a means of getting hold of some of the software available from now defunct web sites.
“Mostly” because some of the saved pages have links that were set up in a way that the robotic save routine couldn’t follow.

And those who specifically instructed the robot not to follow. Consider how much useful stuff from a certain person has “mostly” vanished (I say mostly as even ftp archives got scrubbed, but if you have some old CD-ROMs…).

I didn’t say how they came to have links that couldn’t be followed or why anyone did it.
In some cases it was to force people to be looking at the most recent version rather than an old copy. This sort came back to bite when the people concerned moved on.

Well, strangely enough I don’t think the APDL site was fully copied by the Wayback and Dave definitely “moved on”¹ which had the whole APDL repository missing until a bit of work was done to get things available again.
Yes, I’m aware that Rick was referring to someone different.

Well, strangely enough I don’t think the APDL site was fully copied by the Wayback

It did have a very full copy up until last summer and then started reporting:
“Sorry. This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine.”

Apparently site owners can ask for their sites to be excluded!

So do we need a Wayback Machine backup invoked periodically, say monthly?
