Apple TV

It strikes me that the Apple TV (2nd gen) could be a decent & cheap RISCOS host… Cheaper than a Beagleboard even. ARM Cortex-A8 based, 256MB RAM, DVI, USB etc. Perhaps the RAM is a little less than ideal, but with the price (£101) and worldwide availability as such, it could potentially make a nice basic platform. Just throwing it out there… |

Good idea – can it be hacked to install other OSes? There also more generic TVs/monitors1 around in a similar vein, e.g. the Th-1535 and other more consumer-oriented devices. 1 I think the monitors are designed more for internet browsing, etc. than online TV viewing. |

The first gen Apple TV (Intel CPU) is able to run Ubuntu but I have not found anything to suggest that other OSes are installable yet on the 2nd gen (ARM) version. Though it has been jailbroken, which I guess is the first step. I assume cracking the boot loaders would be the second… |
