Sharing HardDisc0 with ShareFS

The share menu option is permanently greyed out for the SCSI::HardDisc0 on my BB xM. If I create an obey file containing *share SCSI::HardDisc0 and set it to run at boot, then I can share the disc. It seems to work perfectly sharing files between the Iyonix and BB in both directions. So why is the menu option greyed out for SCSI::HardDisc0 if sharing this disc seems to work as it should? This situation is the same with both the current ROM on the ROOL website and the ROM built by Rob Heaton on the 18th of December. |

Removeable drives can’t be shared from ADFS/SCSI filer, only drive 4-7. They could disappear at any moment leading to disappointment all round in the form of ‘please insert disc :0’ errors while typing (or in the case of ADFS a flashing floppy drive light too). The SHARE command lets you share any old rubbish, including things in DeviceFS! |

Thanks for the explanation. |

Of course, the logical caveat to this is that the nature of USB is that pretty much anything is removable, so it may be time to think about this further. In the meantime, we’re looking at doing a standalone tool to simplify this kind of thing. |

Note my careful wording: it’s /SCSI/Filer, it doesn’t know how the drive is connected nor that USB can be yanked out from under its feet. The correct time to think about this in in filing system bounty 4 by having a common iconbar filer which understands this kind of stuff and is more easily tailored. In the meantime I suspect some more effort will need to be poured down the drain making utilities to support this mode of use. Maybe Santa will donate to some of the open bounty tickets? |
