Etherusb

Could anyone give me chapter and verse on the installation of Etherusb. |

Sorry, I can’t manage chapter and verse right now, but I can offer some help. Importantly, you don’t need to recompile anything. It’s much easier than that. Get EtherUSB from http://effarig.co.uk/riscos/ To get you going, all you need to do is run the module and plug in the USB Ethernet dongle. To make the start-up automatic, you will need to add an Obey file to your system. This is the bit that I can’t help with right now, sorry, as I’m at work and not next to the machine. |

I should have made myself clearer I am using a Beagleboard XM and wish to use the on-board network if possible. If I click on the module I get network activity lights but the interface itself does not exist in network settings. |

That’s mentioned in the EtherUSB thread. If/when you get it working, it’d be good to include it in the Configuring Networking wiki page. |

Various threads Tell me to put the obey file in !inetsetup which I can’t seem to locate, there is an !internet folder but I also need a directory called autosense and I’m unable to find that. Sorry if this is really simple to you lot but I’ve not done much with Riscos. |
Trevor Johnson (329) 1645 posts |
IIRC you just create that directory if it’s not already there. Not sure about !inetsetup. |

!InetSetup is in (Pling)Boot.Resources.Configure.!InetSetup. AutoSense is in there. EtherUSB goes in (Pling)Boot.Resources.!System.500.Modules.Network. I used DHCP to make it easy. If you’ve downloaded a copy of the hard disc image that has the relevant directories and copies of AutoSense.EtherK & AutoSense.EtherUSB alongside which you can place the Obey file. What is it with plings on this forum that sometimes they do what you expect & other times don’t |

Got the network up and running now but Netsurf crashes out with a segmentation fault. (Just clicking on BBC News front Page) |

Deleted Netsurf downloaded a fresh copy re-installed …….but same problem, I get ‘stack frame has gone out of bounds with address fffff3’ Has anyone had anything similar ? |

Which version of NetSurf are you using, and which version of EtherUSB? If it’s any consolation, I use NetSurf (always a recent development build) and EtherUSB (the latest version) on my BeagleBoard xM with no such problem. I’m sure numerous other people do the same, equally without problems. The consolation is that the problem must be perfectly well soluble, if we can only find what is provoking it. When you say you’ve got the network up and running, what other tests have you done to demonstrate the fact? Do you have ShareFS, LanMan(98) or Sunfish/Moonfish allowing you to transfer files? Or have you merely pinged to and from other computers? |
Ken Taylor (1461) 15 posts |
Other than the fact that it connects to the local intranet at work. I have not got anything else to test it on. |

Tried Riscos 5.17 to no avail. |

For NetSurf try the test builds. |

Make sure you’ve got all the latest versions of the dependencies installed too – AcornURI, Iconv, SharedUnixLibrary & Tinct |

Have you got the time set correctly? I remember from when I first got my BB-xm some 15 months ago that if I forgot to set the time then the version of !Netsurf I was using quite often fell over. This was using a USB network adaptor before the driver for the onboard network socket was available |

How are you opening the page? I use NetSurf all the time for accessing the ROOL site without problem, except for the occasional time out. I normally use the hotlist, which has a number of entries for pages in the ROOL site. This was posted using NetSurf. |

Good advice. This is posted from a BeagleBoard xM running NetSurf r13520 (the latest as of a few minutes ago), EtherUSB 0.12 and RO 5.16 (yes, I must upgrade that one!) |

Please try saving NetSurf’s Choices (NetSurf’s iconbar menu → Choices… Click “Set” in any section), and restarting NetSurf. |

I had this a couple of days ago when getting this pandaboard up and running. Inadvertantly I did what Michael suggests above whilst hunting around for the reason! |
Ken Taylor (1461) 15 posts |
Yep! the above works. I’m posting this from Netsurf. |
Dave Higton (281) 668 posts |
OK, Ken, are all your problems sorted now? |
Ken Taylor (1461) 15 posts |
Certainly for Etherusb but I’m going to be starting a few more threads just to get to the bottom of a few niggles. |
